Detectives are asking for the public’s help identifying and locating a gunman who robbed an east Savannah store July 23.

The man entered the Family Dollar on the 1900 block of East Gwinnett Street about 6:30 p.m., waited until customers left, and then robbed the clerk, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

The suspect was described as a black male in his 40s who is between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 140-160 pounds. He was wearing a black and red ball cap, a gray T-shirt and blue jeans. He had a white gauze patch on the right side of his face.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward. A confidential tip line is open directly to investigators at 912-525-3124.

Ankle monitor ID’s purse-snatching suspect

A purse-snatching suspect who police say lied about his identity but was identified through his ankle monitor was arrested on Savannah’s southside Monday.

Police say Tyrhee Lamon Edwards, 17, of the 2500 block of Oak Forest Drive, was pursued and detained by witnesses after he stole a purse from a 50-year-old woman at Wal-Mart on Montgomery Crossroad just before noon Monday.

Edwards gave a false name to responding officers and was uncooperative, said Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Julian Miller. A trace on the monitor Edwards was wearing, however, led police to his probation officers, who identified him.

Edwards has been charged with robbery by sudden snatching.
