Part of a nationwide effort to promote police-community partnerships in an effort to reduce crime, the Savannah-Chatham police department is encouraging locals to participate in tonight’s National Night Out.
Officers will be on hand at about two dozen locations throughout Savannah and Chatham County, affording neighborhoods the opportunity to meet the police in person.
That effort, said Savannah-Chatham police Patrol North commander Maj. James Barnwell, is designed to increase people’s comfort level with the police.
“I think it is important to return National Night Out to the neighborhoods and encourage our neighbors to look out for each other and report suspicious or unusual activity to the police,” Barnwell said.
