The Armstrong Atlantic State University volleyball squad was the only team to emerge from the 2013 Pirate Volleyball Classic unscathed as the Pirates collected 3-1 wins over North Alabama and Shorter on Saturday to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record.
In the first match of the day, the Pirates got 12 kills from senior Jessica Santaniello and 11 kills from junior Stephanie Sfara to collect a 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 win over North Alabama (2-2). Senior Megan Pando added 37 assists and 13 digs for Armstrong.
The second match pitted the Pirates against Shorter, which was 3-0 in its tournament action heading into the final match of the tournament. The Hawks took the first set, 25-17, before the Pirates rallied to win the next three sets 25-18, 25-15, 25-23 to clinch the match.
Santaniello hit .405 with 17 kills and 10 digs to pace Armstrong, while junior libero Morgan Hill tallied a career-high 25 digs. Sfara added 10 kills and Pando notched 26 assists.
In other action, Lincoln Memorial defeated Flagler 3-0, and GRU Augusta 3-1; Shorter downed GRU Augusta 3-0; North Alabama defeated Erskine 3-1; and Flagler defeated Erskine 3-0.
Armstrong returns to action Friday, traveling to Mount Olive, N.C., for the Mount Olive College Invitational. The Pirates take on the University of Mary at 6 p.m.

STATESBORO — Savannah Christian placed first in the girls meet and fourth in the eight-team boys meet at the Statesboro Home Race.
The Raiders’ Caitlin Heldt was second, Jennifer Colter third, Kyra Hayden fourth, Haley Wilson sixth and Brooke Horton eighth.
Ty Colter was ninth for the SCPS boys, followed by Philip McGee (19th), Ty Pilkington (24th), Walker Wright (26th) and Jacob Simmons (38th).
Islands’ girls team finished fourth, and the boys were fifth.
