City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 159 Darling Street near Louisville Road in west Savannah on Wednesday afternoon. The spill of about 90 gallons was the result of a manhole overflow. The spill is classified as minor under state Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
Water and sewer crews were notified of the spill at 3:18 p.m. and corrected it by 3:30 p.m. using vacuum trucks to control the overflow. The main was cleaned and will be examined with a robotic camera soon, city officials report. A larger manhole will be installed and raised and the canal maintenance road will be re-routed to avoid this manhole. A wireless manhole high level alarm will be placed in the new manhole. Spill notifications will be put at Market at Dundee Canal and at the dead end of Darling Street at Dundee Canal.
All agencies required by the state EPD were notified.
