Shaquanda Middleton sank a free throw with 2.8 seconds left to give Savannah High’s girls a 50-49 victory over Jenkins on Friday night in the season opener for both basketball teams.
Middleton finished with a team-high 22 points. Milina Doswell added 10 points.
Jenkins’ Faith Sanders led all scorers with 23 points and 17 rebounds. Teiyana Gordon added 10.

VIDALIA — D.J. Mincey threw for three touchdowns, all in the first half as Vidalia (10-1) rested its starters with a 52-7 halftime lead and went on to beat Taylor County (6-5) in GHSA Class AA playoff action.
Vidalia advanced to the second round to play Augusta’s Laney, which beat Cook County 18-13.
Mincey was 7 of 10 for 196 yards and no interceptions. Tra Hardy rushed 13 times for 108 yards and two scores.
Jordan Black caught three passes for 99 yards and returned a punt 54 yards for a TD.
Vidalia had the advantage in first downs (17-5), rushing yards (187-89), passing yards (196-31) and, thusly, total yards (383-120). The hosts punted twice, the visitors eight times.

Senior Tanner Guy caught three touchdown passes from sophomore Brent Anderson, and senior running back Herron Gardner added three touchdowns to lead the Crusaders to victory.
Junior Rico Rodgers gained 62 yards on just three carries and scored a touchdown.
Robert Toombs Christian Academy will host Thomas Jefferson Academy from Louisville next Friday night.

MACON — John Mitchell threw three touchdown passes to John Hefner, and Mitchell ran for another score as Stratford Academy topped Pinewood Christian in the first round of the GISA Class AAA state playoffs.
Pinewood’s season ends at 6-4-1.
Patriots quarterback Dalton Johnson threw for a score and ran for another. John Michael Thompson caught the 4-yard touchdown toss in the second quarter.
Mitchell and Hefner teamed for touchdown passes of 21, 49 and 33 yards. Mitchell also had a 3-yard TD run.
