A 74-year-old Savannah man faces felony charges after police say he fled the scene of a wreck in which he struck a bicyclist on the city’s westside.
Slaten Armstrong, of the 1000 block of East 32nd Street, called 911 Friday evening to surrender to Savannah-Chatham police who were investigating the crash just before 6 a.m. at Ogeechee and Tremont roads, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.
Armstrong was charged with a felony count of hit-and-run with serious injuries.
Police earlier in the day released a description of the white pickup truck Armstrong was driving to area media after the wreck left 44-year-old Gregory Scott Cassell with serious injuries that were not life threatening.
Officer’s responding to the initial call witnessed the truck flee the scene of the wreck, and investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from a nearby gas station that showed the suspect drive into the parking lot and then leave the area.
Metro’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to look into the incident, Miller said.
Candlelight vigil for homicide victims to be held
The 23rd annual candlelight vigil ceremony in remembrance of homicide victims will be held Thursday at the Greater Gaines A.M.E. Church.
The Voices of Homicide Victims Group will hold the gathering at 6 p.m. at the chapel at 1006 May St. to give family and friends of homicide victims the chance to meet to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones.
It also provides them an opportunity to learn more about the programs and assistance that are available to them through the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office Victim-Witness Assistance Program.
This year’s special performance artist is Shvokeia Watson, of Senior Praise and Sign Ministry.
