Empty Stocking Fund: Working mom struggles to balance family, school

The past few years have been difficult for Jennifer, who’s a student.

She and her husband had been having marital problems. They worked hard to solve them, especially for the sake of their only child, a 3-year-old boy, but it didn’t work. They split up earlier this year.

Jennifer receives a small child support check from her former spouse each month. That helps cover some of the expenses, but not all of them.

She believes in the importance of education as a way to a better life, so she’s not giving up on her classes. To make ends meet, she’s working seasonal jobs to earn needed dollars.

Balancing family, school and work has been a hardship for this young mother. It’s especially difficult asking others for help, as she’s someone who believes in shouldering her own burdens. But she knows what Christmas means to small children. She wants her son’s eyes to light up on Christmas morning, and it pains her to know that she can’t make it happen alone.

The Empty Stocking Fund was created with the belief that no child should have a bleak holiday season. Many are trapped in circumstances beyond their control and shouldn’t be penalized.

They should have a reason to smile, which is what spreading cheer and joy is all about.

Contributions will be acknowledged in the manner requested by donors.
