Rare blood disorder saps joy from the holidays

Rebecca and her husband Henry were like many working people these days, earning enough to get by and hoping better days are ahead.

Then, in September, Rebecca woke up in the middle of the night suffering severe chills. She noticed she had dark bruises on her legs and arms and circles under her eyes. Worse, she was spitting up blood.

In prior weeks, Rebecca hadn’t been feeling well and was having trouble with her weight. But she ignored it. She had two children, whose ages are 13 and 10, to care for and a job she couldn’t miss.

But she couldn’t ignore the latest severe symptoms either. Henry took his wife to a hospital emergency room where doctors diagnosed her with a rare blood disorder that requires her to have her blood monitored weekly.

The treatments are hard, as they make her tired and sleepy. She also bruises easily, and any scratches she gets are slow to heal. Her condition has forced her to quit working, which put this family in a financial bind.

Rebecca and Henry always have made sure Christmas was a special time for their two children. But this year, that’s impossible.

The Empty Stocking Fund is designed to help children in difficult circumstances experience the joys of the holiday season.

Contributions will be acknowledged in the manner requested by donors.
