Chatham County Sheriff’s Office warns public of scam

Chatham County Sheriff Al St Lawrence wants to alert the public about a scam involving the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and court system.

On two occasions a person identifying himself as CCSO or “Chief Deputy Roy Harris” has called a potential victim and told them there was a fine they needed to pay for contempt of court. He went on to tell them to report to the court house with a Green Dot card and pay, said Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Gena Bilbo.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office does not contact anyone by phone directing them to put money on an account to pay a bond or for any other reason. A deputy will hand deliver a subpoena or any process. Any jury notices will come by mail. This is another attempt by criminals to use the Sheriff’s Office to dupe unsuspecting victims.

If anyone feels they have been a victim of this scam they should contact Internal Affairs CCSO at 912-652-7693
