City of Savannah crews responded Monday to a minor sewage spill at a ditch at 12328 Largo Drive. A grease blockage in an 8-inch diameter gravity sewer main forced sewage to spill from a nearby private lateral line that had its cleanout cap removed. The total volume discharged was 385 gallons, which is classified as a minor spill under Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
Savannah Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 2:58 p.m. and the spill was corrected at 4:15 p.m. The blockage was cleared and the mix of contaminated and drainage water was pumped from the canal and back into the sewer collection system. The ditch was flushed and lime was placed on the affected area. Sampling will be done. Spill notifications were put at the spill site and Wilshire Canal at White Bluff, city officials report.
All agencies required by the EPD were notified.
