The Savannah Music Festival ushered in its 25-year silver anniversary Thursday with a total of seven concerts throughout the city.
The day’s lineup included two of four sold-out shows by New Orleans-based Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the first of two shows by The Avett Brothers.
Along with bringing in artists from around the world for performances in Savannah, festival organizers are also committed to fostering creativity and promoting education. Each year, the festival offers residencies, seminars and more to continue to grow Savannah’s music scene.
“We’re going to keep the Savannah Music Festival alive and flourishing,” said festival director Rob Gibson. “Our mission remains the same: Connecting artists and audiences, educating the next generation of patrons and scholars and fostering economic growth. Our best work is still ahead of us.”
Several free public performances come out of these education initiatives, including a Big Band Showcase from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 27 at Rousakis Plaza; Combo Showcase from 4-6:30 p.m. March 27 and 28 at Reynolds Square; and Swing Central Jazz Competition from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 28 at Lucas Theatre.
Over the years, the Savannah Music Festival has earned accolades as a musician’s festival, a place where artists can spread their wings and try new things.
Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis describes the festival as “a series of concerts that brings the world to Savannah,” adding that, “the world is much closer during the music festival.”
Pianist Marcus Roberts says the festival has “a feeling of family to it” that makes it intimate and inviting.
Tickets still are available for several shows scheduled through April 5, including country music star Vince Gill, singer/songwriter Jason Isbell, Savannah native Kristina Train and others. Check availability on the festival’s website.
“Very few festivals in the world can deliver the diversity of music that we present in a city as beautiful as ours,” said board chairman Harold Yellin.
