Armstrong second in GrubMart Intercollegiate

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — The seventh-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State golf team battled wet conditions to shoot a first-round 295 and hold second place at the JSU GrubMart Intercollegiate after Monday’s action at the Silver Lakes Golf Club.

The Pirates are four strokes behind host Jacksonville State (291) in the eight-team field. The tournament, originally scheduled for 36 holes on Monday, was shortened to 18 holes due to the inclement weather. Jacksonville State’s “B” team also shot a first-round 295, while Jacksonville University, Morehead State and Columbus State are all tied for fourth after first-round 299 scores.

Senior Shad Tuten leads the Pirates after firing a 70, tying for fourth individually. Junior Cory Griffin shot a 73 and is tied for 12th, while junior Travis Williamson shot a 75 and is tied for 24th. Sophomore Howard Hickey and senior Justin Wylie each shot 77s to sit tied for 31st, while freshman Joseph Jarrard, playing as an individual, shot a 78 and is tied for 41st.

Play concludes at the GrubMart Intercollegiate with a single round of 18 holes today with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m.

SSU relay team fifth

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Savannah State men’s shuttle hurdle relay team led the Tigers at the annual Florida Relays this past weekend with a fifth-place finish.

SSU’s Felton Chinn, Cameron Hall, Lemaar Shakir, and Randy Thomas ran a 58.56 to finish fifth in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay.

The same SSU team garnered the program’s first relay win at the Penn Relays last April, with a time of 58.07 in the shuttle hurdle event.

In the 4x200 relay, the team of Kenshard Hamilton, Justin Leggett, Hall, and Shakir finished in ninth place with a time of 1:24.78.

In the women’s meet, Asia Stinson ran an 11.68 in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 25th place.
