The Savannah College of Art and Design Buzz Bus brought a large donation of new and gently used art supplies to students at Shuman Elementary School on Friday.

SCAD staff, students and Art the Bee surprises the school’s art teacher, Adele Hughes, with art supplies ranging from paint brushes and craft supplies to construction paper and colored pencils.

Shuman’s librarian Lara Harrison also received a donation of children’s books by SCAD authors and illustrators. The Buzz Bus celebrated Shuman students’ hard work and completion of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test.

The students were presented with a performance and lesson by SCAD breakdance troupe Meto4 and from the SCAD Drumline. The aim of these acts is to help students learn how to manage anxiety during stressful times such as tests.

The Buzz Bus program, which SCAD president and cofounder Paula Wallace established in 2010, makes surprise visits to local elementary and middle schools and other youth-centered organizations to promote art education through one-on-one student workshops, book readings, musical performances and art-supply donations. It has reached nearly 6,700 children since its inception.
