HIGH SCHOOL: Savannah Christian's Hendley, Heldt win state track and field titles

ALBANY — Savannah Christian’s Summer Hendley and Caitlin Heldt won titles in the Class A Private School state high track and field meet Friday.

Hendley won the high jump for the second year in a row with a leap of 5-foot-1 and her teammate Heldt won the state title in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 23.53 seconds.

Hendley also took third place in the long jump with 16-8 3/4.

The Raiders’ Maiya Cooper took second in the 100-meter dash in 12.29.

MACON — Brad Butler slammed a three-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game to spark Calvary Day to 13-3 victory and a split in its two-game series with First Presbyterian.

Will Sutton went the distance and improved to 4-4 with the pitching win, and Austin Thomas and Zach Duke each had two hits and two RBIs as the Cavaliers fought back to keep their season alive.

First Presbyterian Day won the first game 9-3. Brent Sanders, Butler and Chris Bashlor had RBIs in the first game. Game 3 is set for 4 p.m. today.

EASTMAN — Ashlyn Zaragoza collected three goals and one assist, Allyson Garcia had three assists and one goal, and Maura O’Kane tallied two goals and two assists as Islands blanked host Dodge County in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA playoffs.
