The Savannah Morning News collected 14 awards in the Georgia Sports Writers Association’s 2013 contest. The results were released Tuesday.

Competing in Division I for the largest-circulation newspapers in the state, Morning News staff writers earned six first-place honors. Both the section and the Sunday section were judged third-best in the division.

Donald Heath received top honors for pro and college sports story on deadline for his coverage of the Georgia Southern football team’s upset of Florida; as well as his news story on GSU’s move up to the FBS; and best overall column for a piece about Savannah State. Heath also earned a second-place award for best feature, non-deadline in high school sports.

Dennis Knight received first-place honors in high school sports for his deadline news story on Beach High girls basketball coach Ronald Booker’s retirement. He also was second to Heath for best column for a piece about playing Augusta National. Knight was third in high school deadline event coverage.

Nathan Dominitz received first-place honors for best columnist for a collection of his columns, with sports editor Anthony Stastny second in the category.

Dominitz also received first-place honors for outdoors/amateur non-scholastic sports writing for a feature on Army Sgt. Kristian Cedeno, a war veteran and amputee entering the Enmark Savannah River Bridge Run. He also was third in that category for coverage of the Rock ’n’ Roll Savannah Marathon. In addition, he collaborated with staff writer Dash Coleman on the third-place news story on deadline, pro/college sports.
