

The Islands YMCA gymnastics team traveled to Tampa, Fla., for the 2014 YMCA National Gymnastics Championships on July 3-5 at the Tampa Convention Center.
About 1,800 athletes traveled from across the country to compete in the event. Each of these young athletes had to qualify to compete in this meet. The schedule consisted of a senior reception to recognize graduating high school seniors, an Olympics-style opening ceremonies at the Raymond James Stadium and three days of competition.
The Islands team represented the YMCA of Coastal Georgia Association as well as the city of Savannah. The team had 37 girls and boys athletes competing in levels 1 through 8, and they earned a total of 105 medals. The medal count: 21 gold, 24 silver and 14 bronze.
The gold medalists were: Darby Kaplan, Delana Theiss, Gracie Wilson, Kinnett Howard, Sydney Helton, Caison Winslow, Dustyn Scoggin, Lilly McIncrow, Alannah Grandy and Kayla Lyttle.
One of the gymnasts, Brooke Avino, advanced to the Level 8 All-Around finals and placed 21th overall in the national meet.
