LOCAL COLLEGES: Pfeiffer homers sink Armstrong 10-1

PEMBROKE, N.C. — Pfeiffer University launched four home runs en route to a 10-1 non-conference baseball victory over Armstrong Atlantic State on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The Falcons (19-24) stretched their current win streak to four with the win over the Pirates (22-10), who saw their own four-game winning streak come to a close.

Pfeiffer got on the board in the second inning with a pair of runs on an RBI double by Kyle Hackney and an RBI single by Dalton Lindley. The Falcons added a run in the fourth to build a 3-0 lead, then put the game away with a spate of home runs over the next four innings.

Jon Gray launched a solo home run in the fifth for Pfeiffer, then Jacob Yates hit a three-run home run in the sixth. Gray added his second solo shot in the sixth and Cole McGraw capped the scoring with a two-run shot in the eighth.

The Pirates got their lone run of the game in the ninth on a Casey Maloney RBI single.

Meanwhile, Pfeiffer starter Ethan Greene (5-4) was masterful on the mound, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finishing the contest with a complete-game three-hitter, giving up just the one run and walking one while striking out seven.

Chris Lusted (0-1) took the loss for the Pirates in his first start of the season, giving up six hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings of work, walking one while striking out one.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Josh Stevenson allowed one run over six innings to help the Georgia Southern Eagles cap off an eight-game road trip with a win over Charleston Southern.

Matt McCall (bounced back after allowing a ninth-inning homer to Harrison Wilkins to record the save. Stevenson (1-2) allowed five hits, three walks and struck out six.

The right-hander stranded eight base runners, including two in the first inning. The win was his first of the season.

Georgia Southern (21-11) recorded 10 hits and walked 13 times but left 18 runners stranded. Ben Morgan walked four times and reached base in all seven plate appearances. Robbie Dodds led the team with three hits. Zac Lenns and Scooter Williams both tallied two hits each.

MEN’S GOLF

Pirates 4th at GrubMart

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — The 12th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men’s golf team fired a final-round 293 to finish fourth at the Jacksonville State University GrubMart Intercollegiate.

The Pirates finished the tournament with an 898 total as the host Gamecocks captured the team title with an 869 score, winning by 17 strokes over Columbus State (886). North Alabama (894) finished third, followed by Armstrong and Lipscomb (916) to round out the top five teams in the 10-team field.

Junior Shad Tuten fired a 2-under-par 70 to pace the Pirates individually, finishing tied for fifth with a 223 total.
