Tybee activated its outdoor warning system this morning after lifeguards spotted lightning and three waterspouts at the southern end of the island, said lifeguard Sloan Maner.
“We’re flying double red,” he said around 11:30 a.m. “That means the beach is advised to be closed.”
Lifeguards were keeping swimmers out of the water and off the beach.
“We’ve been getting a lot of lightning,” he said, noting that it was still drizzling, but he expected the advisory to be lifted soon.
Just after noon, lifeguards reported another waterspout north of the island, the Chatham Emergency Management Agency reported. Officials urged beachgoers to be aware of changing conditions.
