An elderly Florida man died Thursday afternoon when the camper van he was driving wrecked on Interstate 95 in Savannah.
Stanislaw Norbert Ilnicki, 77, was declared dead at the scene of the 12:40 p.m. wreck just south of the Jimmy DeLoach Parkway exit on Interstate 95, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.
Ilnicki, of Port Charlotte, Fla., was alone in a Dodge Ram 3500 camper van headed north when he lost control, causing the vehicle to swerve across all lanes and flip on its side before catching fire, Miller said.
Witnesses told police a tire blowout precipitated the wreck. The police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the wreck.
