Savannah-Chatham police have closed Montgomery Crossroad east of Truman Parkway following a wreck involving multiple vehicles that began when an SUV fled from officers Friday evening.
About 7:15 p.m., an armed robbery was reported at the Dollar General on Apache Avenue, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman. A black SUV was spotted leaving the scene. Officers spotted a vehicle matching the description on Abercorn Street and began following it.
The black SUV police were following sped away from the officers who were behind it, Miller said. The driver turned onto Montgomery Crossroad and the SUV collided with one car at Waters Avenue, then continued at a high rate of speed before crashing into three other vehicles in front of the entrance to Wal-Mart, Miller said.
Two male occupants of the SUV got out and ran, but were apprehended by officers on foot, Miller said.
Three people were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries, Miller said.
Police expect the eastern portion of Montgomery Crossroad to remain closed until about 10:30 p.m.
Accident investigators, forensics units, detectives and patrol officers were on scene.
