The first Savannah Amateur Table Tennis Tournament, “Get It On Like Ping Pong,” will be played Oct. 25 at the Armstrong Center, 10056 Abercorn St. The net proceeds from the event will benefit Union Mission and The Empty Stocking Fund.
Presented by the Savannah Morning News, the tournament is sponsored by Seacrest Partners, Brasseler USA, Optim Health, Memorial Health, Parker’s, South State Bank, Stayinsavannah.com, Thomas & Hutton and J.C. Lewis Ford.
Players and guests, including some Savannah business and community leaders, will be treated to an exciting round-robin format of tournament play with many of them in costume. Festivities will include DJ Ray from Q105.3, heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and a silent auction featuring autographed sports memorabilia. The silent auction will include hand-crafted children’s furniture and toys, travel and restaurant gift cards, personal services and merchandise from area retailers.
Former U.S. Table Tennis Team member Derek May will serve as the tournament director. May is the executive vice president of newspapers for Morris Publishing Group, the parent company of the Savannah Morning News.
“We are excited to present the first ever table tennis tournament for charity in Savannah,” said Michael Traynor, publisher of the Savannah Morning News and savannahnow.com. “It promises to be a fun and exciting evening as Savannah’s ‘Ping-Pong talent’ comes out to support two great causes — Union Mission and The Empty Stocking Fund.”
