One person has been taken to a hospital after an SUV crashed off of Ga. 204 in southwest Chatham County on Thursday night, and police have closed a stretch of the highway while they investigate the wreck.
About 9:30 p.m., an SUV traveling westbound on Ga. 204 left the highway went deep into the wood line between U.S. 17 and Gateway Boulevard, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.
Southside Fire/EMS removed the driver and transported the person to a local hospital with injuries that were believed to be potentially serious, Miller said.
Metro police and firefighters searched the area with support from a helicopter to determine if other people were involved in the wreck. As of about 10:30 p.m., police believed only the driver was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Miller said.
Miller said Ga. 204 between U.S. 17 and Gateway would be blocked to traffic until after midnight while the police department's Major Accident Investigation Team worked the scene.
