The Pirates (7-1, 2-0 PBC) stretched their regular-season league winning streak to 27, dating back to 2012, with the victory over the Bobcats (4-5, 0-3 PBC) on Saturday. Armstrong returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Francis Marion in its 2014 home opener at 7 p.m. at the ARC.
Georgia College pushed the Pirates to the limit in the first set, holding a 24-20 lead and serving for the set, but Armstrong rolled off six straight points — including two kills from Emily Wylie — to take the first set 26-24. The Pirates then hit an outstanding .486 in the second set with 19 kills and just two errors to take the set 25-13, and won 11 of the last 13 points of the third set in a 25-12 win to close out the match. CROSS COUNTRY
Armstrong men win meet at Columbia International
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Armstrong men’s cross country team won its first meet since reinstatement of the program in 2009, capturing the Columbia International University Invitational.
The Pirates placed all five runners in the top 10 to win with 21 points, coming ahead of second-place Coker (69) and third-place USC Beaufort (74) in the eight-team field. Host CIU (91) and Erskine (101) rounded out the top five schools.
Pirates freshman Henning Schein captured the individual title, running the 5K in a course-record time of 16 minutes, 08.92 seconds. Sophomore Christian Davis (16:36.63) finished third, while sophomore Alex Martinez (16:43.83) finished fourth. Freshman Donald Shelton (16:58.83) placed seventh and freshman Guillaume Corneloup rounded out the Pirates’ times on the day by finishing eighth (16:58.83).
Armstrong had won a pair of dual meets since reinstatement, but this is the first meet win featuring multiple teams. Schein also captured his second title in as many races after winning the dual meet with regionally-ranked Georgia College on Sept. 5.
“I’m proud to be a part of a program first,” Armstrong coach Michael Sergi said of the title. “But I’m more proud of our guys’ effort today.”
The Pirates will return to action Oct. 11, running in the Queens (N.C.) Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
COLUMBUS STATE 3,
ARMSTRONG 2, 2 OT
Chelsea Person’s header in the 102nd minute propelled No. 5 Columbus State to a 3-2 double overtime win over host Armstrong.
The Cougars (4-0-1, 1-0 PBC) edged the Pirates (3-2, 0-1 PBC) in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams. Armstrong will return to action Wednesday, hosting Florida Tech in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest at the Armstrong Soccer Field.
In a match featuring two of the tougher defensive teams in the PBC, a flurry of goals highlighted the first 20 minutes of action. Armstrong got on the board first in the fourth minute as Amanda Green’s pass was slotted near side by Jenny Allen for a quick 1-0 lead. It was Allen’s fourth goal of the season.
Allen then delivered an assist on the next Pirate goal as Randi Schroedel’s shot from outside the box beat CSU keeper Maylyn Parsons high and staked Armstrong to a 2-0 lead 14 minutes into the match.
Columbus State answered quickly a minute later. Cassandra Wade beat Armstrong keeper Morgan Luckie high on a shot from the right side in the 15th minute to draw the Cougars back to within one, then a failed clearance in the 19th minute found the feet of Person, whose shot from the right side went in the far post side netting to draw the match level at 2-2.
Both teams had chances to win the match in regulation as Parsons made a diving save on a rocket of a shot by Allen in the 55th minute. CSU’s Nicole Corcione had a shot saved by Luckie in the 84th minute.
The Cougars almost won it in the first overtime period as Luckie turned away a shot by Stephanie Kolwicz in the final minute, but just 63 seconds into the second overtime, a corner kick by Ashley Miller was headed in by Person into the far post for the win.
“We got off to a great start and unfortunately, for some reason, we could not maintain the intensity,” Armstrong coach Eric Faulconer said. “Credit to Columbus State as the game wore on, they outworked us, which is disappointing. I continue to be encouraged by the play of our freshmen, I felt they all had good games. However at some point the mentality of our team needs to change and we need to learn what it takes to win at this level. The talent is definitely there.”
Armstrong led in shots midway through the second half 15-8, but CSU had 15 of the last 18 shots taken by either team to eventually have a 23-18 edge in shots for the match. Luckie made a career-high 10 saves in net for the Pirates, while Parsons made three saves in net for the Cougars. CSU had six corner kicks, compared to two for the Pirates, and Armstrong was whistled for 18 fouls, compared to eight for the Cougars.
The Pirates honored the members of their 10th anniversary team in a pre-match ceremony.
