City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 8 Lanyard Way on Whitmarsh Island at 12:48 p.m.
The spill was corrected at 1:15 p.m. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 405 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
The spill was caused by a manhole defect. City crews cleaned soil and concrete from the sewer main and 16 foot deep manhole with City Jet Vacuum trucks, performed water quality sampling, and placed lime on affected areas.
Notifications were posted at 1 Landward Way, at the north end of the detention pond west of Mapmaker’s Lane, at the intersection of Stonebridge Lane / Stonebridge Drive, and at the drainage ditch from Highway 80 crossing of Penrose Drive before going into Richardson Creek.
All agencies were notified as required by State Guidelines.
