LOCAL ROUNDUP: Keene, Calderon lead Calvary past Wheeler County

ALAMO — A.J. Keene scored touchdowns three different ways and quarterback Salvador Calderon passed for four touchdowns to lead Calvary Day past host Wheeler County 47-6 on Friday night.

Keene, a running back and cornerback, had three carries for 74 yards and a score, three receptions for 80 yards and a TD, returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a score, and intercepted one pass.

Calderon was 8 for 10 for 183 yards passing and touchdowns to Keene (18 yards), Robert Heyward (8), Tyler Kilgore (21) and Reiken Donaldson (37).

Calvary (4-0) got rushing TDs from Heyward (9) and Keene (72).

MOUNT VERNON — The Raiders improved to 5-0 with a road win in a region-crossover game with Montgomery County. Senior Wade Benton scored on touchdown runs of 8 and 2 yards for SCPS. Nick Bateman scored the Raiders’ final touchdown when he recovered a partially blocked punt and scored from inside Montgomery County’s 5-yard line.

The Raiders have a bye next week before facing rival Calvary Day on Oct. 10 on the road.

VIDALIA — Nathan McBride rushed three times for 106 yards and one touchdown, and returned an interception 31 yards for another, as Vidalia blanked Groves.

Jordan Black was 6 of 9 passing for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Groves’ Devin Nixon had 17 carries for 84 yards, while Shabari Davis was 4 of 14 for 51 yards and two interceptions.

GLYNN ACADEMY 16,

BRUNSWICK — The Richmond Hill Wildcats fell to the Glynn Academy 16-3 in a Region 3AAAAA matchup Friday night.

The Wildcats defense created numerous turnovers but it wasn’t enough to stop Glynn.

Richmond Hill’s offense moved the ball consistently down the field during the game only to stall each time it neared the Terrors’ end zone. The Wildcats settled for a first-quarter field goal.

Glynn led 7-3 at the half and scored 16 unanswered points after the Wildcats took the early lead.

The loss puts Richmond Hill at 2-2 overall for the season and 1-2 in region play. Glynn Academy moves to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in Region 3AAAA.

After scoring 48 points in its first two games, Richmond Hill has been held to three points combined in its last two outings.

Next up, the Wildcats host Effingham County at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4.

AUGUSTA – Brenley Hagan passed for 115 yards and a touchdown and ran for another as Pinewood defeated Augusta Prep in a nonregion game.

Hagay hit Joshua Barnard with a 41-yard scoring passing and rushed 18 yards for another.

Kaleb rushed for two touchdowns on runs of 5 and 1 yards.

BJ Stone scored for Augusta Prep on a 1- yard run.

Pinewood is 4-2.

The Lions (1-4) tried to rally with two touchdowns by Caleb Tymchyshyn but came up short.

REIDSVILLE — Landon Martin and Kyle Glover scored two touchdowns apiece to lead Dodge County past Tattnall County.

Martin, who ran for a game-high 94 yards, had scoring runs of 22 and 3 yards.

Glover had second-half touchdown runs of 4 and 15 yards while piling up 69 yards.

Dodge also scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Keith Glover.

Darius Mincey had the lone touchdown for Tattnall (3-2, 0-1 Region 1-AAA (A)) on a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter. Mincey finished with a team-high 50 yards.

Miguel Cortinas booted a 20-yard field goal to open the scoring in the second quarter.

TWIN CITY — Host ECI scored four touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a lopsided victory over Savannah Country Day.

The Hornets (1-4) scored in the first quarter on Hunter Hatley’s 1-yard run and Colton Lichtenberg’s extra point. SCD added a third-quarter score on Bryce Dunn’s 4-yard run, and Dunn scored another TD on a 2-yard run.

ECI’s first quarter included TDs on a 36-yard run, a 30-yard pass, a 68-yard run and a 20-yard interception return.

In the second quarter, ECI scored on a 48-yard run, a 28-yard run and a safety. In the third quarter, ECI scored on runs of 4 and 80 yards.

SOPERTON — Zach Grant ran for 230 yards and three touchdowns to lead Claxton past Treutlen.

Quarterback Cornelius Taylor ran for a touchdown and threw for another in the second half as the Tigers raised their record to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in region 3-A play.

Tonie Grant drew a bases-loaded walk, sending in the winning run as Jenkins defeated Islands 5-4 on Friday.

The game tied the two teams for second place in the region at 4-9.

Carmen Mahany (4-8) pitched a complete-game, six-hit shutout. Lisa Speight and Mo Brown had two hits each for Jenkins (6-15).

COLUMBUS STATE 1

No. 22 Armstrong State Universityd picked up a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Columbus State University. Set scores were: 22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-16.

With the win, the Pirates (9-1, 4-0 PBC) extend their current regular-season league winning streak to 31, while Columbus State fell to 3-7, 0-2 PBC. Armstrong will next host Montevallo at 2 p.m. today.

In a matchup featuring the top-hitting team in the league in Armstrong and the bottom-hitting team in the league in Columbus State, it was the Cougars who jumped out in front by hitting .294 as a team in the first set to take a 1-0 lead with the 25-22 win. The Pirates answered in the second set by hitting .565 with 15 kills and only two errors in 23 attacks to pick up the second set and tie the match at one set apiece.

Columbus State hit negative in the third set with 12 errors and only 11 kills, while the Pirates notched four blocks and three service aces en route to the 25-16 win in set three. Armstrong closed out the match by hitting .323 in the fourth set and notching another four service aces, finishing the match with a season-high 13 aces.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Host Florida A&M downed Savannah State 25-11, 25-6, 25-13 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

FAMU is 3-10 overall. SSU (3-13) was led by Zariya Thomas (five kills), Alexis Washington (12 digs), Caitlyn Masoe (16 digs) and Chantia Taylor (16 digs).
