JACKSON — Alessandro Marra and Nick Milton scored as the Islands boys soccer team defeated Jackson 2-1 on Wednesday in the second round of the GHSA Class AAA state playoffs.
Islands will play Saturday against the winner of the North Oconee-Woodward Academy game.

FAYETTEVILLE — Minh Bui scored twice during Our Lady of Mercy’s four-goal outburst in a 10-minute stint in the second half as the hosts defeated Savannah Country Day in the opening round of the Class A Private School state playoffs.
Kerem Caglayan scored the lone goal for the Hornets, who ended their season at 8-8-1. Our Lady of Mercy (8-5-1) advances to play the winner of Athens Academy and First Presbyterian.

Raiders’ Kyle Wohler qualifies for state
Savannah Christian’s Kyle Wohler has qualified for the Class A Private School golf tournament as an individual player. Wohler shot a 76 in the Class a sectionals on Monday. He will compete for the individual championship in the state tournament May 20 at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler.
The Class A Private School girls tournament is the same day at Crosswinds in Pooler, and the field includes the Savannah Christian team.

Bethesda’s Williams claims state titles
Bethesda sprinter Shidel Williams won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the GISA Class AAA state track and field meet recently.
Williams won the 100 and 200 for the third year in a row. He posted a time of 10.81 seconds in the 100 preliminary and had a 22.3 in the 200 prelims. Bethesda’s Jabari Gaston also captured a state championship in the long jump (21 feet, 5 inches).
Williams placed second in the 400 (50.3 in the prelims). Gaston and Williams teamed with Juwon Johnson and Shyheim Townsend to finish in the 4x100 relay (44.3 prelims).
Rashad Wright was 10th in the 800 (2:15), and Alex Casey placed eighth in the shot put (40-6).
