One person was killed and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries Saturday evening in a multi-vehicle wreck that snarled traffic between Savannah and Tybee Island for hours.

Late into the night, the Savannah-Chatham police Major Accident Investigation Team was continuing to look into the wreck that happened about 5:45 p.m. about a mile-and-a-half west of Fort Pulaski on U.S. 80, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.

One car crossed the centerline and clipped a truck towing a boat on a trailer, the car then hit another vehicle head-on, Miller said. Southside Fire/EMS firefighters extricated one victim from the wreckage. All the injured people were transported to Memorial University Medical Center.

Police Saturday night withheld the names of all the people involved in the accident pending next-of-kin notification.

U.S. 80 remained closed through about 8:30 p.m., leaving miles of backed-up traffic in both directions.

Police expand search for man who tried
to rob SunTrust Bank

Savannah-Chatham police have expanded their search for a man they say attempted to rob a SunTrust Bank on Thursday.

The department on Saturday released photos of the suspect entering the bank in the 2500 block of Abercorn Street about 2:45 p.m. Thursday with a brown rag over his face and wearing a blue hat, a dark patterned shirt, jeans and white shoes.

Police spokesman Julian Miller said the man, who appears to be in his 40s or 50s, handed the bank teller a note demanding money, but then took the note back and left without receiving any money.

Robbery detectives are continuing to investigate the incident, Miller said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call CrimesStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

A confidential Tip Line also is open directly to investigators at 912-525-3124.
