Two-out, run-scoring singles by Joseph Rapp and Trevor Brown in the 12th inning gave the Augusta GreenJackets a 3-1 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Sunday afternoon at Grayson Stadium.
Augusta (27-22) salvaged the final game of the four-game set. Savannah (28-20) won the first three games, 3-1, 6-5 and 2-1.
Shayne Houck started the GreenJackets’ 12th-inning rally by singling with one out. Matt Duffy followed with another single before Mitchell Delfino struck out for the second out.
But Rapp and Brown delivered game-winning hits.
The Gnats, who won on their final at bat Saturday night, had a chance to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the ninth. But with the bases loaded and no out, Phillip Evans, Saturday night’s hero with a game-winning RBI single, bounced out. Yucary De La Cruz and Maikis De La Cruz also bounced out to end the threat.
Augusta finished with 13 hits — three each by Houck and Andrew Cain. Jayce Boyd had three hits for the Sand Gnats and raised his batting average to .351. Kevin Plawecki had two hits and is hitting .357.
Pitchers dominated the game. Jackets’ starter Justin Schumer pitched five scoreless innings, but it was the team’s fifth pitcher, Ian Gardeck, who pitched a scoreless 11th notching the win. Derek Law recorded his third save by blanking Savannah in the 12th.
For the Gnats, starter Luis Cessa went 6 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing a run while striking out seven. Savannah fourth pitcher, Hunter Carnevale, took the loss.
The Gnats head out of town today to begin a three-game series with Greenville. Game time for today’s opener is 2:05 p.m.
