Gnats, Intimidators split 2

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — After Savannah won the opener of a doubleheader, the Kannapolis Intimidators salvaged a 5-4 victory on Jake Brown’s RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning of the second game Thursday night.

Kannapolis (19-32) had led 4-2 before solo home runs from the Sand Gnats’ Maikis De La Cruz in the sixth and Eudy Pina in the seventh tied the game at 4.

In the 11th, Josh Richmond led off with a double and went to third on Eric Grabe’s sacrifice bunt. Brown then singled on a fly to left field for the winning run.

Earlier, the teams continued a May 3 game suspended by rain with visiting Kannapolis leading 1-0 after three innings. It was basically all Savannah (31-22) the rest of the way Thursday for an 8-2 victory.

Sand Gnats left fielder Stefan Sabol was 4 for 4 with a solo homer, three singles, two RBIs and two runs scored. He tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning by driving in Greg Pron, and Sabol homered in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.

Savannah padded its lead with three runs in the eighth. Pina led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on Jeff Reynolds’ single. Jayce Boyd then singled home Pina, and both Reynolds and Boyd scored on Kevin Plawecki’s double.

While left-hander Steven Matz was the starter on May 3, he was placed on the disabled list Thursday and right-hander Tim Peterson was transferred from the Brooklyn Cyclones’ roster.

Marcos Camarena (1-0) replaced Matz in the game and picked up the win with five innings of one-hit, one-run, one-walk, one-strikeout action.
