A Rincon woman has been released from jail on a $20,000 bond following her arrest Tuesday evening on cruelty to children charges.
Laperia Mydell, 23, was arrested after her 3-year-old child was struck by a hit-and-run driver on New Year’s Eve.
The investigation showed Mydell left 3-year-old Jordan Mydell alone in an apartment at Goshen Crossing Apartments while she went shopping at a nearby gas station, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.
The toddler left the apartment and walked on Ga. 21 near Goshen Road. The boy was struck by a vehicle traveling north on the divided roadway.
The child has been released from the hospital and is in the care of the Department of Family and Children Services.
Bond restrictions placed on Mydell by the chief magistrate include cooperation with the Department of Family and Children Services and no contact with her child.
The driver of the vehicle has not yet been found.
Investigators reported the vehicle may have been a late 1990s-model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Suburban or a van.
Ehsanipoor asked that anyone with information on the incident contact the sheriff’s office at 912-754-3449.
Man shot downtown

The victim was found by police at a construction site several blocks away, Miller said.
He added the investigation was continuing Wednesday night.
Effingham sheriff warns of door-to-door scam
Groups going door to door in Effingham County offering to pave property for residents have resulted in a number of complaints to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies report the pavers are from out of state.
“We have received several complaints from citizens after they paid for the job that it was incomplete or not done correctly,” Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.
Ehsanipoor said these types of scams have also occurred in the past at this time of the year.
“ECSO is advising all citizens that if anyone solicits business that they must possess a business license, as well as a solicitation permit from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office,” Ehsanipoor said.
The permit is free of cost and requires the person to provide a valid ID and pass a background check.
Anyone who sees any suspicious activity, such as someone soliciting without a valid permit, is asked to contact the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at 912-754-3449.
