The driver of a Jeep that crossed the center line of a roadway and collided with another car in a wreck that killed a 4-year-old boy on Friday had no driver’s license and was wanted by police.

Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said that Robert Kenneth Waugh, 38, of Guyton was wanted on a probation violation for charges of obstruction of law enforcement and driving on a suspended license.

Waugh was the driver of a Jeep traveling on Ga. 17 when he crossed the center line and hit a white sedan head-on.

The 4-year-old passenger in the sedan, Owen Rivers, was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after the accident.

His mother, Adrianna Flowers, 22, of Guyton was driving the sedan and was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Waugh remains in critical condition at Memorial University Medical Center.

The wreck occurred about 3 p.m. on Ga. 17 between Jabez Jones and Roebling roads.

Shortly before the wreck, the sheriff’s office received a call from a motorist who was behind the Jeep and reported the driver was driving recklessly. Deputies responded and within less than one minute, the motorist reported the Jeep had hit a sedan head-on, Ehsanipoor said.

Ehsanipoor said alcohol was found in the Jeep.

The crash remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol’s Special Collision Reconstruction Team.

2 dogs die; 3 people displaced in fire

Two dogs were killed and three people were displaced after a fire broke out in a Pooler home early Saturday morning.

Firefighters got the call about 3 a.m. and arrived to find heavy flames in the rear of the home at 109 Finn Circle, said Pooler Fire Chief Wade Simmons.

The fire appeared to have started outside the house and entered through the roof, Simmons said. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

The residents made it out unharmed, but their two dogs suffered fatal smoke inhalation, Simmons said.

Firefighters were able to locate the animals, but attempts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful.

“The home owners said the dogs woke them up and that’s why they survived,” Simmons said.

Some of the house sustained extensive fire damage, including the attic and rear portion of the home, the fire chief said.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross provided the family with emergency funds for food and shelter.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — L.J. Mazzilli and Patrick Biondi had three hits apiece, leading a 13-hit attack, as the Savannah Sand Gnats pounded the Charleston RiverDogs 11-4 on Sunday night at Riley Park.

The Gnats won their third straight game and travel to Kannapolis to begin a three-game set tonight.

Mazzilli raised his batting average to .306 with his big night and now has 11 hits in his last 18 at bats.

Jeff McNeil and Dominic Smith each drove in three runs for the Gnats.

Charleston cut Savannah’s lead to 7-4, but the Gnats responded with another four-run frame in the eighth inning to seal the win.

McNeil’s bases-clearing double with two out keyed the outburst. Mazzilli followed with an RBI single for the Gnats’ final run.

Gas prices down a few cents in metro Savannah

$

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have fallen 3.3 cents a gallon in the past week to $3.57 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.

The national average has fallen 0.9 cents a gallon in the last week to $3.6g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Prices Sunday were 20.4 cents a gallon higher than on the same day one year ago and are 4.5 cents a gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 0.3 cents a gallon during the last month and stands 0.4 cents lower a year ago.

“It’s been yet another boring week at the pump with gasoline prices seeing relative calm,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “I don’t recall the last time that the national average, which stands at nearly $3.64 a gallon was the same yesterday, a week ago, a month ago, and also a year ago.

“If you’re a motorist, I’m not sure if seeing such duplicity is bad since prices have remained high, or good, since prices are relatively calm. While I continue to hope for an eventual drop in gasoline prices, the more I’m starting to think that we just won’t see any sort of major summer decline like we have the last few years entering summer.”

Savannah woman dead after Thursday fire

$

A 53-year-old Savannah woman has died as a result of injuries she received in a Thursday morning fire at an apartment house at Lincoln and east 38th Street, said Savannah Fire & Emergency Services spokesman Mark Keller.

Savannah Fire investigators say the victim, Joann Wells, was among seven adults who escaped the burning structure at 219 east 38th St. in the early morning hours of June 5. Investigators say she fled the area on foot and was later transported to Memorial University Medical Center by emergency medical personnel. She was treated in the emergency room and immediately flown to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Augusta. Burn center personnel notified investigators that the victim died early Monday morning.

SFES investigators continue their inquiry into the cause of the blaze. They say the fire appears to have started at the back of the structure, inside a room connected to a porch. The flames spread quickly throughout the occupied side of the structure, causing extensive damage to that side.

The flames also extended into the attic, affecting the unoccupied side (217 E. 39th St.), which is undergoing renovations, causing damage to the attic area but leaving the living area of that side unaffected by fire. The entire structure sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

Savannah-Chatham police reminding citizens to lock their cars

$
0
0

Savannah-Chatham police are reminding members of the public to lock their cars and take their keys after an increase in reports of thefts, particularly those involving firearms left in the vehicles.

Metro police have noted that the decline in reports of entering autos has begun reversing as summer months arrive and students are out of school. They are warning residents that most cases occur when thieves encounter unlocked cars or can see items of value in the vehicle.

“This goes beyond being problematic,” said interim Police Chief Julie Tolbert. “In addition to the crimes being committed by entering the vehicles and taking items, too often the thieves are finding keys to the vehicles and, lately, we have found an increase in weapons left in the automobiles as well. Weapons should never be left in vehicles.”

Stolen vehicles have been used in other crimes – burglaries, robberies and even shootings that have been reported. Just as often, weapons recovered from suspects have been found to have been stolen, sometimes years earlier.

Police offer these suggestions:

• Lock your vehicles at all times.

• Remove any items that could even appear to be valuable or at least hide them in the trunk or out of sight.

• Be sure to remove any keys from the vehicle, including spare keys to the vehicle and even those to buildings – residences, businesses or storage buildings.

• Try to park in areas best illuminated at night and offering the best line of sight from your residence.

• Call police if you see anything or anyone who appears to be suspicious near vehicles.

• Maintain records of serial numbers or other identifying marks of valuables you may leave in the vehicles.

• Never leave cash in vehicles.

Food Network star Alton Brown headed to Savannah

Celebrity chef Alton Brown will bring his live show to Savannah in 2015.

The “Iron Chef” host is taking his brand of quirky humor and culinary science on the road with “Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour.”

Brown will appear at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Johnny Mercer Theatre. Ticket are priced at $44.50, $54.50 and $100.

Tickets go on sale June 13 and may be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office, by phone at 912-651-6556 or 800-351-7469, or online at www.savannahcivic.com or www.etix.com.

Brown’s tour promises to be an eventful evening of stand-up comedy, talks show antics, multimedia lecture, live music and food experimentation.

Be prepared: Ponchos will be involved. The show will offer an interactive component in which audience members will have the opportunity to serve as Brown’s trusted assistants on stage.

“I’ve been cultivating material for this show for about a decade, so it’ll feel pretty darned good to finally get it out of my head and onto a stage,” Brown said. “I feel we’ve come up with some pretty amazing food demos, and the multimedia segments are solid ... but I do have to say I’m a bit nervous about the singing parts.”

Brown is also known for “Good Eats,” a show he wrote, produced and hosted for 13 years on Food Network before making the jump to Cooking Channel, where it airs currently. Combining food science, pop culture, skit humor, innovative cooking and the occasional belching puppet, “Good Eats” garnered a Peabody Award for broadcast excellence in 2007.

Brown served as the culinary commentator of “Iron Chef America” for 11 seasons, and hosted “Next Iron Chef” for five seasons. In 2012, he joined the cast of “Food Network Star” as a mentor and one of his team members won.

Brown took home the James Beard Award for top food show host in 2011and the medal bookends match nicely with the one his first book nabbed in 2002. Speaking of books, he’s written seven, the last three of which made the New York Times Bestsellers List.

Brown’s newest venture is his touring stage show which combines many of the elements that made his television shows so unique with some new tricks such as live music, highly unorthodox culinary demonstrations, multimedia presentations and lots of audience participation.

For complete info on when and where the tour is scheduled to stop, go to www.altonbrowntour.com.

Eric Harrison, 41, of Eden was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, reckless conduct, and battery, family violence act.

Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said deputies responded to 182 Raccoon Drive in the Foxbow Farms neighborhood about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday on a report of a domestic disturbance involving a man with a gun.

“When sheriff’s deputies were on scene trying to get the suspect out of the residence, the suspect walked outside and fired at least one shot at a deputy,” Ehsanipoor said. “The suspect retreated back into the residence before deputies were able to return fire.”

Harrison surrendered after a brief standoff with deputies and is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail.

Savannah woman dead after Thursday fire

A 53-year-old Savannah woman has died as a result of injuries she received in a Thursday morning fire at an apartment house at Lincoln and East 38th streets, said Savannah Fire & Emergency Services spokesman Mark Keller.

Savannah Fire investigators say the victim, Joann Wells, was among seven adults who escaped the burning structure at 219 E. 38th St. in the early morning hours of June 5.

Fire investigators continue their inquiry into the cause of the blaze.

Guyton man high on meth charged with arson

A Guyton man has been charged with arson in the first degree after setting a house on fire early Monday morning. At approximately 4 a.m. Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies and fire crews responded to a structure fire at 134 Second St. in Pinora.

The initial reports show that Ronald Heath, 58, of Guyton was high on methamphetamine when he intentionally started a house fire by lighting a paper towel on fire in the kitchen. The fire spread throughout the residence and caused extensive damage, sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

“Heath told deputies he started the fire because he was high on methamphetamine and was upset because his drug dealer would not come back and party with him,” Ehsanipoor said.

Heath lived at the residence but was renting the property.

Heath was arrested and taken to the Effingham County jail.

Savannah-Chatham police reminding citizens to lock their cars

Savannah-Chatham police are reminding resdients to lock their cars and take their keys after an increase in reports of thefts, particularly those involving firearms left in vehicles.

Stolen vehicles have been used in other crimes — burglaries, robberies and even shootings that have been reported. Just as often, weapons recovered from suspects have been found to have been stolen, sometimes years earlier.

Police offer these suggestions:

• Lock your vehicles at all times.

• Remove any items that could even appear to be valuable or at least hide them in the trunk or out of sight.

• Be sure to remove any keys from the vehicle, including spare keys to the vehicle and even those to buildings — residences, businesses or storage buildings.
