The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to temporarily suspend scheduled and ongoing construction-related lane closures in southeast Georgia for the upcoming holidays.

The suspension, which will apply to interstates, major state routes, and roads near major shopping areas, will run from 5 a.m. Dec. 23 to 10 p.m. Dec. 27 and from 5 a.m. Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. Jan. 2, said Jill Nagel, GDOT spokeswoman.

“We know that a lot of people will be hitting the road for the year-end holiday season and we want to make it a little easier for them to go through Georgia and arrive safely at their destinations,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry

Drivers are urged to driver carefully during the holidays.

For updated information about travel conditions on Georgia’s interstates and state routes, GDOT advises travelers to call 511 or consult 511ga.org before heading out. Georgia 511 is a free service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Also note that Georgia’s Move-over Law requires drivers to move-over one lane when a law enforcement, emergency vehicle or construction crew is on the side of the road and displaying flashing emergency lights, Nagel said. If it is unsafe to move over, then slow down below the posted speed.

Christmas comes early at Lady Bamford Center

Santa and Mrs. Claus got a lift from one of JCB’s iconic excavators Friday as they arrived at the company’s Lady Bamford Center on Richard Street for the annual Christmas extravaganza.

JCB, the world’s largest privately-owned heavy equipment manufacturer, bought Christmas presents for each child for Santa to give out. Other highlights included story time with Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves as well as carols sung by the children.

“The Christmas Extravaganza is always a favorite event for those of us at JCB,” said Thom Peebles, vice president of marketing for JCB North America. “To see the delight of the children as Santa enters on his sleigh and to watch the excitement on their faces as they meet Santa and receive their own present from him is an experience unlike any other.”

Operated by Wesley Community Centers of Savannah and supported by JCB, the Lady Bamford Center provides education and social skills development to children from 6 weeks to 5 years old.

The center, founded by the wife of JCB’s chairman, offers priority admission to children from homeless and low-income families, as well as children with physical, mental or emotional challenges. Its interactive curriculum prepares young children for kindergarten and elementary school and helps them compete with other children academically.

Empty Stocking Fund: Widow with 4 kids seeks holiday help

Karen’s husband died a year ago. She and their four children have had a difficult time dealing with the loss, which is even tougher during the holidays.

Yet they persevere, thanks, in part, to their strong faith.

As a single parent, Karen does her best to responsibly raise her children, whose ages range from 3 to 9. She is proud of them, they are good kids who do well in school, but they still miss their father.

It pains her to know she can do little to ease their heartache, and she is determined to make this Christmas a happy one, as last year’s holiday was weighed down by depression. But Karen has limited means and is seeking help to raise her family’s spirits.

She knows they will be grateful to wake up with presents under the tree on Christmas morning.

This news organization started the Empty Stocking Fund in 1971 so that needy children could experience the joys of the holiday season. Sharing blessings with others is what this season is all about.

Contributions will be acknowledged in the manner requested by donors.

Juan Zuniga of Savannah-based Storm Soccer Academy was selected to attend a U.S. national team camp for Under-15 this past week in Sunrise, Fla. Zuniga, 13, who lives in Bluffton, S.C., previously went to California in September for an eight-day camp.

He is the third player that Storm Soccer Academy — which draws players from Savannah, Richmond Hill, Statesboro, St. Simons, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island, S.C. — has sent to U.S. youth national team camps in the past 18 months.

Zuniga and Hilton Head Island’s Dominica Claudio, Abigail Brighton, Miya Poplin and James Brighton represented Storm with the U.S. Youth Soccer’s ODP program and Region III this winter at events in Boca Raton, Fla., Phoenix and Bradenton, Fla. These players were selected as one of the top 18 players in their age groups across Region III, which is 11 states.

Ava Van Marter of Hilton Head and Isabella Gutierrez of Statesboro were on the alternate list for these events in their age groups.
