Police are calling the death of a Savannah teenager whose body was found in her bedroom on Monday night suspicious.

Sixteen-year-old Altonise Jones was reported missing about 7:10 p.m. by co-workers who said they hadn’t seen her since Saturday, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman. Officers went to the 200 block of West 39th Street, where Jones lived in a home with her elderly grandmother, to inquire about her whereabouts.

About an hour later, Baker said, a relative searched the house, found Jones’ body and called police.

Forensics officers and detectives were called to the scene. The circumstances surrounding Jones’ death are under investigation, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will perform an autopsy, Baker said.

Anyone with information that can help police is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020. Detectives can be reached directly and in confidence at 912-525-3124.

The Port Wentworth Police Department's annual "Operation Lucky Charms" resulted in more than 100 arrests during the St. Patrick's Day holiday weekend.

The program is the city's annual Saint Patrick’s Day Traffic Safety Initiative in conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and ran from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday night, said Port Wenthworth Police Chief Matt Libby.

“This is a zero tolerence enforcement operation, no warnings will be given," Libby said.

In addition to augmented patrols, officers conducted random road safety checks at various points in the city to crack down on impaired drivers, unlicensed drivers, uninsured motorists, and unrestrained passengers, amounting to 600 issued citations and 115 arrests.

Charges ranged from possession of a controlled substance to driving without a license, according to county jail records.

"We expect drivers to do the right thing and obey the laws, those that choose to make bad decisions should expect to be issued tickets and or arrested," Libby said.

“We stress the need for screenings for under-served women in our community because early detection saves lives’’

Sarah Denmark, Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate board president

The Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate announced at its annual awards luncheon Tuesday that it is awarding $357,017 for direct community services that will fund breast cancer screening, education, diagnostic services and patient navigation.

Including Tuesday’s contribution, the affiliate will have awarded more than $2 million in local grants.

“It often surprises people to learn that support for our affiliate is raised here and stays here,’ said Aileen Gabbey, executive director for Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia. “Seventy-five percent of funds raised benefit the nine counties we serve, and the remaining 25 percent is devoted to research for a cure.”

This year, the local Komen affiliate has awarded seven grants to programs in the Coastal Georgia area:

• Curtis V. Cooper Mammography, $60,000

• Southeast Georgia Health System’s Mammograms in Motion, $60,000

• Liberty County Health Department’s BRAVE III Project, $49,977

• Hearts and Hands for Mammograms,$29,278

• Bulloch’s Breast Brigade, $52,064

• Effingham Hospital’s Comprehensive Education and Screening Program, $58,566

• Coastal Community Health Services Breast Cancer Outreach, $47,132

“Each month in our service area, 12 women are diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer,” said Sarah Denmark, board president. “We stress the need for screenings for under-served women in our community because early detection saves lives. The five-year survival rate for early diagnosis is 98 percent.”

Funding for the community grants is generated primarily through the Savannah Race for the Cure, which is scheduled to begin April 16 in historic Savannah’s Ellis Square.

Local Roundup: Georgia softball blanks Georgia Southern

ATHENS, Ga. — Capitalizing on seven hits and three Eagle errors, the No. 12 Georgia softball team (26-5, 1-2) shut out Georgia Southern (15-14) in a run-rule 9-0 fashion on Wednesday.

Cortni Emanuel and Alyssa DiCarlo accounted for two hits each of Georgia’s total, as DiCarlo also scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Tina Iosefa, Maeve McGuire and Lacey Sumerlin also collected two RBI apiece.

Brittany Gray (8-3) pitched well for the Bulldogs, striking out six while giving up three hits and a walk. She had a streak of sitting down seven-consecutive batters while an error allowed the only other baserunner for the Eagles.

After leaving runners in scoring position in the first two innings, Georgia broke it up in the third to lead 4-0. With two outs, Alex Hugo was issued the first of two walks of the night, as Iosefa’s ninth home run of the year went soaring over left field for the 2-0 advantage. The inning continued, as with bases loaded Sumerlin notched a two-RBI single to close out the scoring.

Five more runs came in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk to Iosefa brining in the first run. DiCarlo and McGuire went back-to-back with their two-RBI hits to seal the win at 9-0.

Armstrong softball sweeps Flagler

The No. 22-ranked Armstrong State University softball squad ran its winning streak to six with a 7-0, 7-4 Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Flagler College at the Armstrong Softball Field.

The Pirates improved to 22-8 overall and 6-2 in the Peach Belt with the sweep, taking over second place in the league standings in the process. Flagler falls to 19-20 overall and 4-12 in the league with the losses.

Game one was a pitcher’s duel between Flagler’s Haleigh Corbally and the Pirates’ Tori Bates as both pitchers kept the other team off the scoreboard through four innings. Armstrong State broke through in the fifth inning with a pair of key two-out hits as freshman Macy Coleman’s RBI single and junior Jane Trzaska’s two-RBI double put the Pirates ahead, 3-0.

Armstrong State then broke the game open in the sixth with four runs on an RBI single by senior Michelle Breen and a three-run home run by junior Hannah Reppert, her 10th of the season.

Bates notched the win for the Pirates in game one, hurling six innings of one-hit shutout ball, striking out four to move to 7-5 on the season. Corbally (8-7) took the loss for the Saints, giving up 10 hits and seven runs in six innings of work, walking four while striking out six.

In game two, the Pirates had just two hits, but they made the most of them in the 7-4 win over the Saints. Armstrong State scored three first-inning runs on a sacrifice fly by freshman Logan Harrell and a two-run single by Trzaska.

Harrell then blasted a grand slam home run to right in the second for the early 7-0 lead.

Trzaska (7-3) hurled five innings of six-hit, one-run ball, walking one while striking out one to notch the win for the Pirates in game two. Callie Reed (7-8) took the loss for the Saints in game two, giving up two hits and seven runs — three earned — in 1 2/3 innings, walking two while striking out two.

Nineteen students from the Savannah Technical College Peace Officer Academy celebrated graduating from the program with a completion ceremony Tuesday.

The four women and 15 men have completed coursework containing the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Training Course, which qualifies them to be state-certified peace officers.

This is the 18th group of students to complete the program since its inception in 2009, and the program has graduated 253 P.O.S.T.-certified officers with a 97 percent placement rate.

Each cohort selects a fallen officer for whom the graduating class will be named, and they have a tradition of giving the family of the fallen officer a challenge coin dedicated to the officer.

A challenge coin is a symbol of an unbreakable bond of dedication and allegiance among military personnel and law enforcement officers.

This cohort decided to honor Cpl. Richard Allen Hall Jr., of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office who died in the line of duty on Sept. 16, 2015, in a motor vehicle accident. He is survived by his father and stepmother, John and Clisty Hall, one brother Steven (Christy) and sister Jennifer (Michael) and family.

Hall was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. and a 14-year member of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.
