LOCAL SPORTS: St. Vincent's Powers, Savannah Christian's Stone throw no-hitters

BROOKLET — Madison Powers pitched her first no-hitter this season to lead St. Vincent’s to a 4-1 victory over Portal in a softball tournament Saturday at Southeast Bulloch.

The junior struck out eight and walked two in seven innings.

Powers (4-11) also pitched in a 6-5 win over Jenkins in six innings — when she fanned seven and walked four — and an 11-0 loss to Southeast Bulloch in five innings.

Host Bible Bapist lost to Hilton Head Prep and fell to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in SCISA Region 1-A play.

William Campbell scored twice for the Braves, in the first quarter on a 20-yard run, and in the second quarter on a 50-yard run. Casey Hughes returned a kickoff about 65 yards for Bible Baptist’s other score. All three extra-point attempts failed.

MEMORIAL DAY 37, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 31

DUBLIN — Memorial Day defeated Trinity Christian as Mickey Habersham scored three touchdowns.

Habersham scored on a 49-yard pass from Kemuan Tillman, a 2-yard run and a 78-yard kickoff return.

Irvin Riley scored for the Blue Thunder (2-2) on a 73-yard run and a 23-yard run. He led the team in rushing with 139 yards.

ASU, Wingate split doubleheader

WINGATE, N.C. — The 24th-ranked Armstrong State volleyball squad split a pair of contests at No. 12 Wingate. The Pirates took the first match in five sets, while Wingate (7-1) won the second match in three sets.

ASU def. Wingate 25-17, 27-25, 18-25, 22-25, 15-13

Top players—ASU, Emily Wylie 20 kills; Stephanie Sfara hit .340, 19 kills; Morgan Hill digs; Kamryn Sherman 45 assists, 19 digs.

Wingate def. ASU 25-21, 25-21, 25-23

Top players—ASU, Rachel Thompson hit .381, 12 kills; Wylie 10 kills; Sherman 36 assists, 12 digs; Taylor Permenter 5 blocks.

The win for the Pirates (5-1) represented the highest-ranked opponent they have defeated since Sept. 9, 2000, when ASU beat No. 7 Tampa in Tampa. It was also the first win for the Pirates over a nationally-ranked team since a 3-1 win over No. 24 Rollins on Sept. 17, 2011.

The doubleheader was the first time that Armstrong has played the same opponent twice in one day since the Pirates faced, and swept, Palm Beach Atlantic on Oct. 16, 1992.

The Pirates return to action Friday, opening Peach Belt Conference play at 7 p.m. at GRU Augusta.

MEN’S SOCCER

SCAD 2, MILLIGAN 2, 2 OT

HARDEVILLE, S.C. — The Savannah College of Art and Design played two overtime periods and came out with a 2-2 tie to undefeated Milligan College at the SCAD Athletics Complex on Friday.

The visiting Buffaloes (2-0-2) led after the first period 1-0, but the Bees (1-2-1) came back in the second period to go ahead 2-1 on goals by Sergi Sauras and Jordan Trinci-Line.

Milligan tied it in the last five minutes of regulation play to force overtime. No goals were scored during these two periods so the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

 

RUNNING

Tucker, LaFleur tops at Tunnel to Towers

Seth Tucker and Michelle LaFleur won overall titles Saturday morning at the third annual Tunnel to Towers Savannah 5K Run & Walk.

Tucker, 28, ran the downtown Savannah course — which started and finished at Orleans Square — in 15 minutes, 54.97 seconds. LaFleur, 42, one of the elite runners nationally in her age group, posted a time of 17:37.27 to successfully defend her overall female title.

The Bluffton (S.C.) Fire Department kept its grip on the Siller Cup in the second year of the firefighter challenge team competition. The five Bluffton runners, including 2013 overall winner David Adams (second overall Saturday, 15:47.06), totaled 1:50:50 to hold off the second-place Savannah firefighters (1:57:31).

The female masters winner was Betsy Howard, 41 (20:49.48), who finished third among women behind LaFleur and Lauren Grant, 31 (19:41.36).

The male masters winner was Tony Murphy, 42 (18:26.44), who was 11th among all males. Mark Boyce, 28, was third (16:27.34) behind Tucker and Adams.

The event benefits the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors the legacy of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller along with his 342 FDNY brothers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty on Sept. 11, 2001.
