Each year the Education Department of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History
conducts the “Dear George Washington” contest for Gilder Lehrman Affiliate Schools.
Participating students in grades 2-5 write a letter to President George Washington
telling the President what to focus on during his first term. Students write as though they
were present at George Washington’s inauguration on April 30, 1789. The nationwide
contest encourages students to think critically about the issues facing early Americans
in a way that develops a deeper understanding and appreciation of American History.
