Woman killed in train accident on set of Gregg Allman film identified

The woman killed Thursday when a train hit people on a Doctortown train trestle has been identified as 27-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Jones of Atlanta, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies arrived to find there were several people from Open Road films and the Meddin Studios from Savannah filming a movie called “Midnight Rider” in the area and had gotten onto the train tracks. A northbound train struck some of them, killing Jones and injuring seven others. One of the injured was flown to a Savannah hospital while others were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The film is a biopic on the life of Greg Allman, with William Hurt one of the actors portraying the rock icon.

The movie crew was working on train tracks without permission from the railroad when a freight train crashed into the production team and its equipment, a sheriff’s investigator said Friday.

The deadly collision took place at a railroad trestle that crosses the Altamaha River in the rural county about 60 miles southwest of Savannah. The tracks, owned by CSX Railroad, cross private land owned by forest-products company Rayonier, which has a nearby paper mill. Joe Gardner, the lead detective on the case, said the crew had Rayonier’s permission to film on its property next to the train tracks.

“CSX has told me they were aware they were out there, but they did not have permission to be on the train tracks,” Gardner told reporters.

Trespassing onto railroad tracks is illegal under Georgia law and punishable as a misdemeanor.

Production of “Midnight Rider,” starring Hurt as the Allman Brothers singer in his later years and All-American rejects vocalist Tyson Ritter as a young Allman, began this month in coastal Georgia. The film is based on Allman’s 2012 memoir, “My Cross to Bear,” with production based at Meddin Studios in Savannah.

The film studio Friday referred calls to a Los Angeles publicist, Nadine Jolson, who did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment but emailed a brief statement.

“All of us on the production team are devastated by the tragic accident that happened today,” the studio’s statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our crew member.”

CSX issued a statement saying the railroad company was “deeply saddened” by the crash and cooperating with investigators. It provided no further details other than to say the train involved was traveling to Savannah from Memphis, Tenn.

A CSX spokeswoman, Kristin Seay, declined to comment further and would not confirm that film crew had no permission from the railroad to be working on the train tracks.

Authorities provided few details about the collision. Gardner said the train smashed some of the crew’s equipment, and it’s possible some of the injuries were caused by flying debris. Among the items found on the tracks was what appeared to be a mattress for a bed, Gardner said.

It also wasn’t clear if the film crew was waiting to film a train or was caught unaware by one approaching, Gardner said.

“That’s a very active train track,” he said. “There’s probably anywhere from up to 10 trains a day that go through on those tracks.”

Former Super Bowl MVP and University of Georgia star Hines Ward will deliver the keynote address at the Savannah Morning News and savannahnow.com 2014 Best of Preps banquet, presented by the Georgia Ports Authority.

Ward is a two-time Super Bowl Champion, claiming MVP honors in Super Bowl XL. A four-time Pro Bowler, he is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. On New Year’s Day 2012, Hines became only the 8th player in NFL history to reach 1,000 career receptions on what would be his last catch ever in the league.

A native of Forest Park, he was recruited to play quarterback for the home-state Georgia Bulldogs. At UGA, Ward was successful as a multi-position player, where he earned All-SEC honors and finished his college career as Georgia's second all-time receiver with 144 receptions. His 3,870 total yards rank second in Bulldogs history to Herschel Walker.

Off the field, Hines Ward has been equally impressive. He was named the "Walter Payton Man of the Year" in 2008, founded the Helping Hands Foundation, and created an after school education program for kids. He has appeared on the covers of Newsweek, Time, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, and was named one of GQ's 2009 "Men of the Year."  In addition to his philanthropic work, Hines and his partner, Kym Johnson, won ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" in season 12.

“We are excited to bring an athlete of Hines Ward’s caliber to Savannah for the Best of Preps banquet,” said Michael Traynor, publisher of the Savannah Morning News and savannahnow.com. “Recognizing the outstanding athletes in our high schools is a job we are proud to do, and to have someone with Hines’ record of athletic and philanthropic accomplishments speak at this banquet is a great honor.”

The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed the flu-related death of an adult male in Glynn County. This is the third confirmed flu-related death in the Coastal Health District this flu season. In addition to the death in Glynn County, there have been two confirmed flu-related deaths in Chatham County. There have been a total of 50 confirmed flu-related deaths in Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months and older get vaccinated against the flu. There are also several simple, everyday precautions people can take to avoid getting and spreading the flu including:

• Cover your cough (try to cough into the crook of your elbow, not your hand).

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If soap and water is not available use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Clean common surfaces like countertops and desks.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs spread this way.

• Stay home and away from others when you’re sick.

Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue.

A Savannah woman has been arrested and charged with a felony in connection with a Tuesday night hit-and-run wreck in Garden City that hospitalized a pedestrian.

Officers arrested Shannon White about 6 p.m. Friday on charges of driving with a suspended license, failure to report an accident with damage and leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, said Garden City police Capt. Gil Ballard. The last charge is a felony.

“Based on information from the public, we were able to identify and locate the vehicle ... and that led to the subsequent investigation and arrest,” Ballard said.

White had been driving a 2001 Toyota Avalon that she did not own at the time of the wreck, Ballard said.

A woman who was walking was struck about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of Ogeechee Road. She suffered head trauma, and was transported to Memorial University Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.

The driver, who police now say was White, initially stopped after hitting the woman but then fled the scene traveling southbound toward Dean Forest Road.

Ballard thanked the public for calling police with information that assisted in the investigation.

Prosecution of a case against a Rincon couple accused of receiving more than three pounds of marijuana via FedEX has been put on hold.

The district attorney’s office on Wednesday asked that the case against Crystal Marie Clifton and Zachary Justin Smith, both 30, be moved to the “dead docket.”

Effingham County Superior Court Judge William E. Woodrum Jr. agreed to the request from Assistant District Attorney Brian Deal.

Deal asked that the prosecution be postponed indefinitely, “pending receipt of further evidence necessary for the successful prosecution of this case.”

The case can be reopened if new evidence is submitted.

Clifton and Smith were arrested on Feb. 27, 2013, after a package was delivered to their house on Warren Street.

Authorities in California notified the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office when a narcotics K-9 officer alerted on a package prior to it being shipped, according to sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor.

The street value of the marijuana was more than $15,000, Ehsanipoor said.

The pair were indicted for possession of marijuana and intent to distribute.

In the Effingham case, Hart was accused of molesting a 4-year-old child in March and May 2013.

Hart was a registered sex offender who was convicted of child molestation in 2006, according to the sheriff’s office. He was on probation from those charges when he was arrested on the new charges a year ago.

He was sentenced by Judge William E. Woodrum Jr.

Thunderbolt, Savannah mark Arbor Day

The city of Thunderbolt celebrated Georgia Arbor Day on Saturday with support from the Thunderbolt Tree Commission, Savannah Tree Foundation and Three Oaks Realty.

About 50 volunteers, including the Savannah College of Art and Design and Savannah State University student groups, planted three white oaks and two Chinese pistache trees around Thunderbolt’s baseball field.

White oaks are second only to live oaks in longevity here in Georgia.

Thunderbolt Mayor Beth E. Goette read an Arbor Day proclamation at the event, which marked the town’s one-year anniversary of attaining Tree City USA status, a designation awarded by the national Arbor Day Foundation to communities that promote a healthy urban forest. To qualify for the title Thunderbolt established a community forestry program supported by an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, a tree ordinance, tree department and official Arbor Day observance.

The city of Savannah has held “Tree City USA” status for 27 years.

“The town has been supportive. We haven’t really asked for much except cooperation and they have definitely given that. Savannah Tree Foundation has also been very helpful,” said Thunderbolt Tree Commissioner Linda Morgan.

Sponsoring Saturday’s event was locally owned Three Oaks Realty Co., a full-service boutique real estate firm.

Tree honors late musician

On Friday, Georgia Arbor Day, legendary jazz musician Ben Tucker was honored with the planting of a tree at the DeRenne Plaza Condominiums where he had been a long time resident with his wife, Gloria.

Tucker died in June.

Savannah Tree Foundation volunteers planted a Japanese maple near a stone marker bearing Tucker’s name.

The tree was sponsored by DeRenne Plaza residents, whose association board Tucker had served until his death.

“He was a monumental icon of Savannah, much like the Candler Oak itself,” said Savannah Tree Foundation executive director Karen Jenkins.

“It is entirely appropriate that this tree is being planted in his remembrance on Georgia Arbor Day.”

Tyrese Tanner and Brandy Montgomery both scored 21 points for Auburn (15-12, 6-8 SEC). Tanner, Auburn’s leading scorer, played only three minutes and scored only two points in the first half after picking up two fouls.

“Credit Auburn,” Georgia coach Andy Landers said. “They played without their best player for almost the entire first half. When she came back in the second half, we didn’t have anyone who could guard her. Auburn played well. Georgia didn’t play the way we wanted to play. It was a very, very poor result.”

The Tigers scored 34 points off of a season-high 24 turnovers by Georgia and converted on 24 of 31 attempts at the line.

A back-and-forth first half featured five ties and five lead changes.

The second stanza featured much of the same, with five more ties and five more lead changes.

Georgia enjoyed its largest lead at 44-39 with 9:54 left, but Auburn answered with a 10-0 run over the next 2:07 to flip the margin to 49-44.

The Bulldogs last led 50-49 following a Donald layup with 5:55 left. Auburn’s Peyton Davis answered on Auburn’s next possession and the Tigers outscored Georgia 18-9 the rest of the way.

Violent crimes detectives are working to sort out the details of a two-person shooting and shots-fired call that happened early Sunday morning in downtown Savannah.

Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Julian Miller said officers were called to Dosha Bar and Lounge at 128 E. Broughton St. about 1 a.m. to break up a disturbance at the bar.

Immediately afterward, officers heard shots being fired about one block east on Broughton. Police saturated the area and found the two gunshot victims running from the scene. A 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were taken to Memorial University Medical Center after the shooting with non-life-threatening wounds, Miller said.

A short time later, officers were called to Reynolds Square at Abercorn and Congress streets for shots fired. Officers were directed by bystanders to a car with four men in it. Police detained the occupants. One man resisted and a stun gun was used by officers. Police have not determined if the occupants were involved in either the shooting or the shots-fired call.

East Broughton from Habersham to Bull streets was cordoned off while police worked the scene, as was Abercorn from East Broughton to Bryan streets.

Patrol officers, violent crimes detectives and forensics investigators remained on scene well after 2 a.m.

Detectives continue to investigate the shootings and whether they are related to either the fight or the shots-fired call. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

Investigators can be reached confidentially at 912-525-3124.

Employees from the BASF site in Savannah  brought science to life for students at May Howard Elementary School on Feb.during the school’s Engineering Week.

BASF Engineers, BR Marshall and Bill Schuler, guided 150 kindergarten students through experiments that included:

• Demonstrating hydrodynamics and gravity showing how liquid flows through a siphon.

• Building catapults from simple materials (plastic spoons, push pins, rubber bands, and a small block of wood).

• Constructing egg protection containers (from construction paper, tissue paper, tape, and Popsicle sticks) which were dropped from a height and then judged for their ability to protect the egg.

• Powering a small light bulb with a potato.

“Many of my students now want to be engineers when they grow up,” said Robin Horan, kindergarten teacher at May Howard Elementary. “They loved the demonstration of gravity, but they had the most fun building and then launching marshmallows in their catapults. Today’s activity was hands-on science at its best!”

Last year, BASF employees brought the company’s award-winning Kids’ Lab program to nearly 500 students in local elementary schools. Kids’ Lab provides safe, fun, hands-on chemistry to students between the ages of 6 – 12.
