Savannah local food leader honored

Georgia’s organic food community honored Savannah resident Teri Schell at the 17th annual Georgia Organics conference, which brought more than 1,000 attendees to Jekyll Island over the weekend.

Schell received the Barbara Petit Pollinator Award for her leadership in Georgia’s sustainable farming and food movement. She helped found the Forsyth Farmers’ Market and is co-chair of the recently formed Savannah Chatham Food Policy Council.

The five-year-old Forsyth Farmers Market was highest among all farmers markets in the state in 2013 in SNAP/EBT redemptions, with $62,000-worth of redemptions. The market, under Schell’s guidance, was one of the first farmers markets in the nation to accept these federal benefits, which used to be known as food stamps. It partners with the nonprofit Wholesome Wave Georgia to double the value of SNAP purchases.

“She quietly and doggedly keeps all these pieces moving because of her passion for equality; and lucky for folks in this room she uses her love of food as the framework for change,” said award presenter Kristin Russell, owner of the Savannah café The Sentient Bean.

The Barbara Petit Pollinator Award’s namesake is a committed leader, culinary professional, and organizer who was president of Georgia Organics from 2003-2009, and the award acknowledges exceptional success in advancing Georgia Organics’ mission by spreading — pollinating — the movement throughout community life, such as the food industry, faith communities, public agencies, schools, and institutions.

Along with its yearly conference, Georgia Organics also sponsors a farmer-to-farmer mentoring program, has campaigned to increase local foods in school cafeterias, and publishes a Good Food Guide listing farmers markets, local and organic food restaurants and Georgia-based organic farms.

Savannah police seeking suspect after drug raid

Eight men have been charged and a ninth is being sought after Savannah-Chatham police raided two houses on West 39th Street Friday afternoon, said police spokesman Julian Miller.

The operation coined “Operation SunGazer” was led by the Tactical Investigation Unit of the Central Precinct with help from the Metro SWAT Team, Central and Southside Precinct Crime Suppression Units and Central Patrol officers. It focused on two houses in the 800 and 900 blocks of West 39th Street and the subjects who were frequenting them.

It followed a seven-week investigation by the Central TIU officers following complaints and information provided by area residents. Detectives identified the suspects involved in the drug activity and had warrants for the arrest of several of the suspects in hand before Friday’s operation.

Miller said police recovered various amounts of cocaine and marijuana along with two weapons and a large sum of money.

Arrested were Deandre Wiggins, 20, charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and tampering with evidence;

Lawrence Williams, 56, charged with possession of a controlled substance;

Eshon Maurice Grant, 21, charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, tampering with evidence, obstruction and possession of marijuana;

Tony Oleando Houston, 38, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, obstruction and driving with a suspended license;

Leonard Randy Washington, 34, sale of a controlled substance;

Timothy Leonard Alexander, 23, possession of marijuana;

Alex Alexander, 20, possession of marijuana;

Emanuel Lee Williams, 35, possession of a controlled substance, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, obstruction of an officer by fleeing and violation of parole.

Still being sought is Joshua Morgan McNear, 22.

Capt. DeVonn Adams, Central Precinct Commander, said the investigation that led to the operation followed concerns voiced by community residents to address rampant street-level drug activity.

“Street-level drugs are associated with everything from small property crimes to homicides,” he said. “A rise in criminal activity in this area caught our attention months ago and information from residents helped us focus on these two houses. It became obvious to us that these locations were being used as a base of significant activity that we had to eliminate.”

Anyone with information on illegal activities in the area or on McNear’s location is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters to CrimeStoppers remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

WESTERN CAROLINA 74, GA. SOUTHERN 72

STATESBOR0 — Justin Taylor matched her career high with 25 points, and her lone 3-pointer of the night with 39 seconds left proved to be the game winner as Western Carolina topped Georgia Southern, 74-72, in a Southern Conference women’s basketball contest Monday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.

Taylor’s triple helped thwart a comeback try by Georgia Southern as the Eagles (9-18, 7-9) erased a 14-point Catamount lead and took a one-point advantage when Angel McGowan got a steal and fed Anna Claire Knight for a layup with 54 seconds left. Knight was fouled and sank her free throw to put GSU on top 69-68.

Taylor got the ball on the left wing and looked to drive put pulled up for the 3-pointer instead and swished it home.

Dosha loses alcohol license after shooting

The city of Savannah temporarily suspended the alcohol license of Dosha Bar and Lounge on Tuesday evening following a shooting early Sunday morning.

The suspension comes after a shooting about a block away from the east Broughton Street business sent a 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life-threatening wounds. The shooting occurred after police were called to the bar to break up a disturbance at about 1 a.m.

Typically, businesses face the loss of a license during a show-cause hearing before the City Council, but City Manager Stephanie Cutter has the ability to issue an emergency suspension if she deems the establishment a threat to public safety, said city spokesman Bret Bell.

This past weekend was not the first time there have been incidents at the bar and the city has had numerous complaints about the business, Bells said.

In late January, city officials held an administrative review, a precursor to license suspension, and the owner was supposed to provide an operations plan, Bell said.

The city has yet to receive that plan, he said.

The business will have an opportunity for a show-cause hearing before the City Council to reverse the suspension.

Police acting on an anonymous tip Tuesday discovered human remains underneath an abandoned house in Savannah’s Cuyler-Brownville neighborhood.

A tip from CrimeStoppers led officers to a house on the 600 block of West 42nd Street, under which they found a body that had been dead for many years, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

The remains have been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab in Savannah for identification.

Police on Tuesday did not say whether the remains were those of a male or female.

Police are trying to determine the identity and cause of death, Miller said.

They are not currently investigating it as a homicide.

Police ask anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
