Paula Deen Ventures announced today its first new business “Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen,” a new restaurant and retail operation at “The Island in Pigeon Forge,” which is a family-friendly real estate project developed by Darby Campbell and Bob McManus, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Pigeon Forge is the gateway community for Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is the location of the Dollywood theme park.
With a projected design, construction and yearly operation budget of nearly $20 million, the 20,000 square foot Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen, scheduled to open in late summer 2014, marks new expansion of the Deen family’s Savannah-based restaurant and retail operation.
“The Island in Pigeon Forge,” whose initial components opened in 2013, will add significant economic growth to the region, as hospitality, restaurants and lodging are the area’s largest sources of revenue.
In this new venture, the Deen project will join other hospitality and retail leaders such as Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Hotel and Build-A-Bear, along with a range of retail and dining operations.

MERCER 5, SSU 4
MACON — Sasha LaGarde connected on a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to send Mercer to a historic win over Savannah State at Claude Smith Field.
With the victory, Mercer (9-0) set a new program record with nine straight wins to start a season, breaking the old mark of eight straight set in 1970.
The Bears are joined by Florida International as the only teams in the nation with 9-0 records through the first two weeks of the 2014 campaign.
SSU (3-5) outhit Mercer 10-6, with Lee Moore and Parker Nix collecting two hits apiece, including a double for each.
Senior Stephen Glaze picked up the win, his team leading third of the season, after tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Things didn’t look good for Mercer to start as Savannah State (3-5) plated a run in the second inning on Aaron Hoffer’s RBI-single.
The Tigers increased their lead up to 4-0 in the fifth after an RBI-single by Mendez Elder and a two-run double from Moore to chase Mercer starter Ryan Askew.
The Bears slowly started to climb their way back into it, closing to 4-1 on Nick Backlund’s solo homer in the bottom half of the fifth.
Backlund’s home run set the stage for LaGarde’s heroics in the bottom of the sixth when he came up to bat with the bases loaded after a single from Charlie Madden and walks to Devin Bonin and Danny Edgeworth.
LaGarde, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, turned on a 0-1 pitch and launched a grand slam over the wall in right center to give Mercer its first lead of the game at 5-4.
The Mercer bullpen took over from there, as Ben Lumsden came on and pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to secure the win and pick up his A-Sun-leading third save of the season.
LaGarde finished 2 for 3 with a career-high four RBI in the win.
The Montreal, Quebec native now leads the A-Sun Conference with five home runs and 16 RBI.

A family dog in Thunderbolt that was not up to date on its rabies vaccination is now in quarantine at the Savannah-Chatham police department’s Animal Control facility after being exposed to a raccoon that tested positive for rabies.
In an unrelated incident, a landscaper working on Skidaway Island is being advised to follow up with his physician after picking up a raccoon that also tested positive for rabies. Chatham County Environmental Health officials remind residents to avoid contact with wild or stray animals and get pets vaccinated against rabies.
“Several species of wild animals that live in our area, including raccoons, can carry rabies which is why it is so important to do what we can to protect our pets and ourselves from being exposed to the disease,” said Chatham County Environmental Health Manager Todd Jones.
Symptoms of rabies in animals include a change in behavior, biting, aggression, showing no fear of natural enemies (such as humans), foaming at the mouth, and paralysis.
The Chatham County Health Department Environmental Health Division offers these tips to protect you and your family from rabies:
• Avoid contact with animals you don’t know.
• Make sure your pets receive the proper immunizations. Dogs and cats should get rabies vaccines by four months of age, followed by a booster shot one year later, and another one every one or three years depending on the type of vaccine used.
• Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or by leaving pet food out at night.
• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not try to nurse sick animals to help. Call animal control or a properly licensed animal rescue agency for assistance.
• Teach children to never handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. “Love your own, leave other animals alone” is a good principle for children to learn. Adults should follow the same rule.
• If an animal ever bites you, seek medical care immediately and contact Animal Control at 912-525-2408 and the Chatham County Health Department Environmental Health Division at 912-356-2160.

A portion of Habersham Street is closed as Savannah-Chatham police investigate following a wreck near East 41st Street.
Two men wanted by the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team were arrested in the incident after they attempted to flee a traffic stop, according to the department.
Three people involved in the wreck have been transported to a local hospital.
Check back to Savannahnow.com for updates as they become available.
A four-vehicle wreck has slowed southbound traffic on Interstate 95 in Pooler.
Pooler Fire Chief Wade Simmons said injuries from the 6 p.m. wreck near the overpass with I-16 were minor.
The middle lane of southbound I-95 was blocked off while wreckers were en route to remove the crashed vehicles. At 6:35 p.m., Simmons said he expected all lanes to be re-opened within 45 minutes.
Two men were arrested and three hospitalized Thursday morning after an SUV fleeing a police car that wasn’t chasing it crashed into a second SUV, sending it into a third.
Two men in the first SUV, a black 2014 Chevrolet Captiva, were transported to Memorial University Medical Center after Savannah-Chatham police and county drug agents apprehended them during a foot chase, said Julian Miller, metro police spokesman. They were treated for injuries and then arrested by the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team.
Three men in the second SUV, a black 2013 Toyota Rav 4, were transported to Candler Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The truck they were in overturned, taking out a utility pole and coming to rest against a third black SUV, an unoccupied Volvo XC90, Miller said.
CNT agents had requested metro police perform a traffic stop on the first SUV with two males in it as part of an investigation about 11:30 a.m., Miller said.
A marked patrol unit attempted a traffic stop on Abercorn near 37th Street on behalf of the agents. The Captiva sped away and the marked unit disengaged, Miller said.
A short time later, police were called to the wreck at East 41st and Habersham streets. The original SUV had sped south on Abercorn and was headed east on 41st Street when it ran a stop sign and broadsided the Toyota, Miller said.
No further information was immediately available.

DECATUR — Khaliq Hughes sank a free throw with 4.1 seconds left in overtime to lift the Calvary boys to a 64-63 victory over top-seeded Greenforest on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class A Private School state tournament.
The win sends the eighth-seeded Cavaliers (20-6) to the state semifinals Monday night at 8:15 at Kennesaw State University against the winner of North Cobb Christian-Whitefield Academy.
Last season, Calvary had its season end when Greenforest administered a 63-29 thrashing in the postseason. The Eagles eventually won the state championship.
“Our boys were more experienced this year,” Cavaliers coach Jason Shell said. “Last year, they were happy to be where they were. This year, they showed up to win the game. They showed a lot of guts. I couldn’t ask them to play any harder.”
The determined Cavs fought back from a six-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation.
Tyrone Riley, who had seven points, nailed a key 3-pointer to slice the deficit in half.
With 27 seconds left, Hughes hit the tying basket.
In overtime, the lead seesawed before Calvary’s Derek Kirkland tied the game with a free throw and the defense came up with a steal, setting the stage for Hughes’ game-winning free throw.
Kirkland led the Cavaliers with 25 points. Hughes finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
