Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have risen 3.6 cents a gallon in the past week to $2.63 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.
The national average has increased 0.4 cents a gallon in the last week to $2.76, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Prices Sunday in metro Savannah were 95.7 cents a gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 12.7 cents a gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 9.4 cents a gallon during the last month and stands 90.5 cents lower than a year ago.
“While some states did indeed see increases over the last week, I remain optimistic after OPEC’s meeting last week to keep oil production unchanged that we’ll soon see relief spreading across more of the country,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. “The percentage of stations selling gasoline over $3 a gallon has declined over the last week, while the percentage of stations selling under $2.50 a gallon has also declined.
“This leads to less variety in gas prices, yet motorists still can stand to save on their next fill up by locating those hard to find stations offering a much lower price on gasoline.”

The Talmadge Bridge will be closed to traffic for about 30 minutes this morning while three cranes pass beneath it to make their way to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The cranes are scheduled to depart from the Port of Savannah at 8 a.m. and will pass under the bridge at around 9 a.m. At 180 feet each, these cranes have undergone preparations for transport since the first of the year.
The cranes will serve the Isla Bella, the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containership. They will allow the Isla Bella to carry more cargo and will in turn contribute to its overall efficiency as a vessel.
TOTE Shipholdings Inc., Isla Bella’s owner, launched the ship in April. It will be in service later this year and will sail between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan. It is one of two LNG powered containerships that will enter service in Puerto Rico this year.
Compared to their conventionally powered counterparts, LNG-powered vessels are fuel-efficient and reduce emissions considerably.
People are encouraged to watch the cranes’ departure from downtown Savannah today.
Savannah-Chatham police are investigating the shooting this morning of a Savannah man in a car that also contained a woman and 4-year-old child in the Cuyler Brownville neighborhood.
The victim, 27, was located in a silver Honda Civic in front of a house on the 900 block of West 41st Street with serious injuries from a gunshot wound. The 23-year-old woman driver and her son in the rear seat escaped injury, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.
A patrol officer from the Savannah-Chatham police department’s Central Precinct was blocks away on another call at 12:21 a.m. when she heard multiple gunshots and the sound of vehicles speeding away. She responded to find the Honda parked in front of a house with the victim inside. Police have determined the original scene of the shooting was at Burroughs and West 38th streets.
Criminal Investigations Division Commander Richard Zapal expressed concern and dismay that shots were fired into a vehicle carrying a child for the second time in a weekend.
“It amazes me that anyone would fire into a car with a child in it,” Maj. Zapal said. “One of the bullets came within inches of striking the child in the back seat. This community must not allow this. Hopefully, someone who has information to help us identify the shooters will be as concerned and come forward.”
Dwight Grant, a 26-year-old Savannah man died Saturday night after a 7 p.m. shooting on the 100 block of Edgewater Road. A 3-year-old boy who was in the car with him received minor injuries, apparently from shrapnel. An illegal drug and paraphernalia that could have been used in the sale of the drug were found in the car.
Detectives continue to try to identify the gunmen in both cases.

A Savannah man faces multiple charges after losing control of a stolen pickup truck and firing a gun at two officers trying to apprehend him early Monday.
Corey Nicholas Baker, 19, was taken into custody at 4:45 a.m. by a Savannah-Chatham police K-9 officer following a two-hour search by officers from all five precincts, K-9, and Aviation Patrol in police helicopter Eagle One, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.
Baker has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime. Other charges could be pending.
The incident began when an Islands Precinct officer on patrol in the Victory Square shopping center saw a white 2014 Chevrolet pickup truck, stolen moments earlier, speed south on Skidaway Road and began to follow it.
After attempting a traffic stop, the officer reported the truck speeding up and turning onto East 52nd Street, eventually stopping in a yard on Oakland Court. When the officer ordered the driver out of the truck, he turned, elbowed the officer in the nose and ran on foot, Miller said.
The officer pursued the suspect who turned and fired three shots. Moments later, the suspect fired two shots at a second officer a few blocks away.
Police saturated the area between Truman Parkway and Skidaway, and from 52nd Street to East 50th Street and were beginning a yard-to-yard search when K-9 Faust alerted on a shed behind a house on Eastgate Drive and his handler ordered Baker to the ground.
A search of the area after the arrest led police to recover a handgun that was reportedly in the pickup when it was left unlocked and with the keys in it at the IHOP restaurant on Victory Drive.
Neither officer returned fire during the pursuit because homes were nearby, police said. The officer who was elbowed was treated by Southside Fire EMS at the scene for an injury to his face.
