CHARLESTON, W.V.—On the day his selection to the South Atlantic League All-Star game was announced, Sand Gnat Casey Meisner lived up to his billing as one of the top pitchers in the league.

The 20-year-old right hander out of Cypress, Texas gave up a solo homer to the second batter he faced — Pablo Reyes, but that was it as Meisner led the Gnats to a 9-1 victory.

The 6-foot-7, 190-pound Meisner cruised through seven innings allowing just six hits, while striking out six and walking one. He improved to 6-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.82.

Alberto Baldonado pitched two scoreless frames to close things out in a non-save situation.

It was the seventh win in a row for the Gnats (31-27), who have won 18 of their last 23.

Designated hitter Eudor Garcia was the offensive star for the Gnats. He went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and hit a pair of home runs. He had a two-run shot to highlight a four run third-inning for Savannah. In the fifth, Wuillmer Becerra led off the inning with a walk, and Garcia blasted a shot over the wall in right for his second homer of the night and third of the year.

Patrick Biondi went 3 for 4 and had an RBI double for the Gnats and John Mora had a double and an RBI triple in the sixth to highlight a 13-hit night for Savannah.

West Virginia starter Yeudy Garcia had a rough night, giving up four earned runs on six hits in four innings. Reliever Jake Burnette didn’t fare any better, allowing five earned runs on five hits in two innings.

The Gnats continue their series with West Virginia today at 7:05 p.m.. Stephen Tarpley (3-0, 1.20 ERA) is set to take the mound for West Virginia. The Gnats had not announced their starter at press time.

Georgia pitcher Ryan Lawlor, a graduate of Calvary Day, was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday.

As a junior in 2015, Lawlor posted a 5-7 record and 3.67 ERA in 14 appearances, all starts. He pitched 73 2/3 innings with 84 strikeouts, both team-highs, and walked only 33. Lawlor, a 6-1, 180-pound Savannah native registered wins over No. 11 Florida State, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and Eastern Illinois this past season for the Bulldogs. In his two-year Bulldog career, the left hander is 9-13 with a 3.96 ERA in 28 games, all starts.

Georgia has had a string of 42 straight seasons with at least one player signing a professional contract. A total of 37 former Bulldogs have reached the Major Leagues.

Also earlier Tuesday, a pair of Bulldog signees were selected in the draft. Pitcher Dakota Chalmers (North Forsyth HS, Gainesville, Ga.) was a third round pick of Oakland while outfielder Chad Smith (South Gwinnett HS, Snellville, Ga.) was a fifth round selection of Texas.

The Braves selected pitchers with all eight of their selections Tuesday. Anthony Guardado, a right hander out of Nogales High in Southern California, was the first pick of the day as a third rounder. Then the Braves picked Josh Graham from the University of Oregon; Ryan Clark from North Carolina-Greensboro; Matt Withrow of Texas Tech and Patrick Weigel from the University of Houston — all four right handers. Atlanta mixed it up with the southpaw Lawlor in the eight round, then took two more righties to close out the day in Taylor Lewis from the University of Florida and Stephen Moore from the Naval Academy in the 10th and final round of the day.

Man arrested; drugs, firearms seized during Tuesday raid

One man is in custody following the seizure of drugs and firearms by the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team.

Early Tuesday morning, CNT agents, along with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 600 block of Atkinson Avenue. There, agents seized cocaine, marijuana and items commonly associated with the distribution of controlled substances, said Gene Harley, CNT spokesman.

Also seized were three firearms, ammunition and more than $1,400 in U.S. currency. Additionally, agents discovered various electronic components and deemed them to be suspicious. CNT requested the assistance of the Savannah-Chatham police bomb squad. The bomb squad confirmed the items could be associated with an incendiary device. They collected evidence and are continuing their investigation, Harley said.

CNT arrested 27-year-old Matthew “Pye” Brown of Savannah. Brown was charged with multiple felony charges including sale of a controlled substance, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Brown was taken to jail.

CNT’s investigation into Brown originally began in April following information he was selling cocaine. Undercover agents successfully made numerous purchases of cocaine from the unsuspecting Brown, Harley said.

Energy company Kinder Morgan Inc. donated $20,000 today to a public-private partnership that is attempting to cut in half the amount of litter in Savannah.

The Keep Savannah Clean initiative launched seven weeks ago as the first comprehensive citywide public-private collaboration to fight litter in the community.

The campaign uses a broad public education effort, citizen engagement through social media, and increased enforcement to target persistent litter. It was created by the City of Savannah, Parker’s convenience stores and the Savannah Morning News, in conjunction with the nonprofit Keep Savannah Beautiful and financial support from more than two dozen local businesses and organizations.

“We are pleased to contribute to a campaign that aims to help keep Savannah beautiful,” said Allen Fore, Kinder Morgan Vice President of Public Affairs. “Kinder Morgan is committed to being a good corporate citizen and good neighbor to Savannah. We are honored to participate in the Keep Savannah Clean program."

Citizens can join the campaign and win weekly prizes by uploading photos of litter pickup efforts, or photos of those breaking litter laws, to www.keepsavannahclean.com or by using social media and tagging photos with #littercrew.

“I am extremely gratified to see our citizens and businesses such as Kinder Morgan step forward and become part of the solution,” Mayor Edna Jackson said. “It’s going to take all of us working together to clean up our community.”

Since its launch on Earth Day, more than 1,200 have become fans of the campaign’s Facebook page, with an average reach of 2,350 people, and some videos receiving almost 8,000 views.

“We want to change behavior through education, awareness and enforcement, and believe this campaign will be a national model for anti-litter campaigns,” Co-Chairman Greg Parker said. “Savannah is the most beautiful city in America. It’s time to for all of us to stand up to keep her that way.”

CHARLESTON, W.V. — Savannah starter Casey Delgado became the latest Sand Gnat to turn in a solid performance on the mound as Savannah beat West Virginia 8-6 Wednesday.

It was the eighth win in a row for the Sand Gnats, who have won 19 of their last 24. Savannah (32-27) is now tied with Greenville atop the South Atlantic League Southern division standings.

Delgado, a 24-year-old right-hander out of Austin Peay State, improved to 3-0 on the year as he gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out five without a walk. Delgado has an ERA of 2.65 for the season.

The Gnats scored a run on an error in the first inning, and then Savannah exploded for seven runs in the third as the Gnats sent 11 men to the plate. Eudor Garcia and Jon Leroux got things started with singles, and Tomas Nido followed with an RBI double to right. Jean Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly for the second run of the frame. After a pair of walks, Luis Guillorme had a two-run double down the left field line. Wuillmer Becerra then delivered a two-run single to left that chased Power starter Stephen Tarpley (3-1), who was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

West Virginia scored in the second when Jerrick Suiter tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chase Simpson.

The Power added a pair in the fourth. Suiter had a two-out single, and Simpson followed with a shot over the wall in right field for his sixth homer of the season.

Connor Joe doubled in the eighth, and West Virginia’s Michael Suchy followed with his third home run of the year as the Power cut the Gnats’ lead to 8-5.

Jeff Roy had an RBI triple in the ninth off Gnat reliever Ricky Knapp. But David Roseboom entered and struck out Elvis Escobar swinging to end the game to notch his fifth save of the year.

It was the second night in a row that the Gnats banged out 13 hits. Guillorme was 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, and Nido and John Mora each went 2 for 5.

The Sand Gnats will be looking to sweep the Power when they conclude their three game series today at 7:05 p.m.

Savannah-Chatham police have added murder charges against a 68-year-old Savannah woman after the death Wednesday of a woman who was shot in an incident earlier this month.

Lorraine Manuel, 27, of Savannah, died Wednesday afternoon at Memorial University Medical Center, said Julian Miller, police spokesman. She’d been in critical condition since she was shot June 4.

Police have said Vivian Corely called Emergency 911 at 3:40 p.m. that day to report she had shot someone inside a rental house she owns off Beaumont Drive in southwest Chatham County. The shooting took place after a discussion between the two women.

Corely had previously been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated battery and criminal attempt to commit murder.

Savannah-Chatham Police detectives are continuing to investigate the incident, Miller said.

Police ask for help in Savannah arson probe

Police are asking the public to help identify anyone seen leaving an eight-apartment building in west Chatham County that was destroyed by a deliberately set fire June 4.

The section of Ocho Rios Villa Apartments on Westgate Court were engulfed in flames when Southside Fire/EMS arrived at 9:46 a.m. that day. Three occupants were transported for treatment of minor injuries after jumping from windows to escape the fire.

Two other incidents — one involving an attempt to start a fire — were reported in the building in the two days before the fire, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

All apartments in the building were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable in the fire that appeared to be started with the use of accelerants, possibly through the use of a container that was thrown through a window. Accelerants also seemed to have been applied to a stairway leading to upstairs apartments, Miller said.

Savannah-Chatham police detectives are working the case with state fire investigators.

Police ask anyone with information that can help them to call the anonymous CrimeStoppers service at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters’ identities remain confidential and they may qualify for a cash reward.

A tip line is also open directly to investigators at 912-525-3124, and most area clergy have agreed to serve as liaisons for anyone who would like to share information with police anonymously.
