Major Accident Investigation Team officers from the Savannah-Chatham police are investigating a two-vehicle collision and the death of one driver after his vehicle submerged in a pond this afternoon.

Daniel R. Sims, 68, was pulled from his submerged vehicle by two Southside Fire and Emergency Services firefighters who witnessed the collision. He was revived after going into cardiac arrest and transported to Memorial University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

Sims had been driving an Acura SUV north on Green Island Drive near the Landings subdivision about 4:10 p.m. when the SUV failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a Land Rover traveling west on Diamond Causeway. The impact redirected the Acura to the northwest where it submerged into a pond.

Jessica Howell, 26, driver of the Land Rover, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Members of the Savannah-Chatham police Dive Team searched the submerged Acura and the pond to assure that no one else had been in the Acura at the time of the crash.

MAIT continues to investigate the accident.

CHARLESTON, W.V.—Trailing by two heading to their last at bat, the Savannah Sand Gnats staged a three-run rally in the top of the ninth and held on to beat West Virginia 4-3 Thursday.

The win extended the Gnats win streak to nine games. Savannah (33-27) has won 20 of its last 25 games and the Gnats remain tied with Greenville atop the South Atlantic League Southern division standings.

John Mora led off the pivotal ninth inning for Savannah with a line drive single to center off Power reliever Jose Regalado. With one out, Jon Leroux tied the game up with a two-run homer over the wall in left center, his fourth round-tripper of the year.

Patrick Biondi followed with a bunt single and immediately swiped second for his 13th stolen base of the year. Joe Tuschak’s infield single to second allowed Biondi to advance to third. Vicente Lupo brought him in from there with a sacrifice fly to right.

Reliever David Roseboom shut the door as Savannah swept the three-game series from the Power. He struck out Tyler Filliben swinging for his sixth save of the season.

Savannah starter Martires Arias pitched four innings — allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Ben Griset followed with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on one hit. Jimmy Duff picked up his first win of the year for Savannah with 1 1/3 innings of solid relief, allowing two hits and no runs, before giving way to Roseboom.

Savannah scored its first run in the fourth when Luis Guillorme led off with a single and scored on a triple by Mora, who was 2 for 3 on the night. Mora was the only Gnat with two hits, but Savannah had a balanced offense with eight others contributing hits.

Savannah will travel to play at Hickory tonight, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. Scarlyn Reyes (5-4, 2.86 ERA) is set to start for Savannah, with Nick Gardewine (3-4, 3.49 ERA) on the mound for Hickory.

The Georgia Department of Transportation wants the traveling public to be aware of a slow moving concrete grinning operation this weekend for the eastbound Interstate 16 Exit 157A ramp and southbound Interstate 95 Exit 99A ramp.

The contractor has scheduled closure of one exit ramp at a time for approximately 12 hours, weather permitting.

The timeframe of work runs from 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 12 until 6 a.m. Sunday, June 14, according to spokeswoman Jill Nagel.

All work is weather contingent. The ramp closures are a necessity for the contractor to grind the concrete surface to creating a smooth roadway for motorists.

This is a WORK ZONE and extreme caution is necessary. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds as they travel through this and all work zones. Message signs, barrels and/or cones will be utilized to alert the public of the upcoming changes.

Savannah man arrested on suspicion of dealing crack cocaine

Narcotics agents say they arrested a Savannah man on Thursday on suspicion of dealing crack cocaine.

Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team agents, Chatham County sheriff’s deputies and a Savannah-Chatham police K-9 arrested 25-year-old Javon Grant in the 300 block of West 31st Street Thursday afternoon. He was arrested on warrants for sale of crack cocaine, said Gene Harley, CNT spokesman.

Crack cocaine, marijuana and items commonly associated with the distribution of controlled substances were seized at the time of his arrest, Harley said. CNT also seized Grant’s vehicle and more than $500 in U.S. currency. In addition to the warrants, he was charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute and other felony drug-related charges. Grant was arraigned Friday in Recorder’s Court and denied bond.

This was CNT’s second operation in the 300 block of West 31st Street in the past three months. In March, agents conducted a search warrant at a house following purchases of crack cocaine on the street and from the house. The search warrant resulted in the seizure of crack cocaine, marijuana, firearms, U.S. currency and the arrest of three people.

CNT regularly conducts checks of locations where prior arrests are made to ensure drug activity has stopped, Harley said.

Detectives are trying to identify three people they suspect of shooting a Savannah man Thursday during an attempted robbery.

Just before midnight, a 39-year-old man was shot when three males entered a residence in the 2000 block of Lewden Street demanding cash, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman. The victim was transported to Memorial University Medical Center with injuries police did not believe to be life threatening.

Investigators are looking for three suspects and two vehicles possibly linked to the crime, Baker said. The first suspect is a black male in his late 20s to early 30s with short brown hair, medium brown skin and a thin mustache. He stands 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 145 to 150 pounds. This suspect left the scene on foot toward Brittney Street.

Currently, he may be driving a tan, older model, small to mid-size SUV. The second suspect is a slender black male with a dark complexion and low haircut, standing 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall. The third suspect is a black male with medium brown skin, standing 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall. He wore a blue buttoned shirt during the incident. Suspects two and three fled toward Jenks Street in a gray or black four-door sedan.

Savannah extends win streak to 10 with victory over Hickory

HICKORY, N.C.—The Sand Gnats continued their free-swinging ways as Savannah banged out 13 hits for the third time in the last four games in an 8-6 win over Hickory.

The victory extended the Gnat win streak to 10 games, Savannah (34-27) has won 21 of its last 26 games, and the Gnats remain tied with Greenville atop the South Atlantic League’s Southern Division standings.

All-Star infielder Jonathan Johnson was one of the offensive heroes of the night for the Gnats. He went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI. He blasted his second homer of the year, and also had his third triple and 10th stolen base of the season.

Right fielder Wuilmer Becerra also had a big night with his eighth homer of the year as he drove in a pair and scored twice. Luis Guillorme and Jon Leroux each went 2 for 4 with an RBI as everyone in the Savannah lineup had at least one hit.

Hickory took the lead in the first inning. Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Morgan walked to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a groundout to first. Jose Trevino drove in a run with a single to right and Jairo Beras brought in the second run one out later on another groundout to first as Hickory took a 2-0 lead.

The Gnats responded quickly in the top of the second. Leroux led off with a single and John Mora hit a shot to center for a run-scoring triple. One out later, Tomas Nido delivered an RBI single to left.

In the third, Savannah moved ahead when Johnson led off with a triple to right and came in to score on a Guillorme single to left as Savannah went up 3-2.

Hickory tied it in the third on Trevino’s eighth homer of the year. The Gnats took the lead back in the fourth when Jean Rodriguez singled and moved to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error. When Nido struck out and broke from first when the throw got away from the catcher, Rodriguez bolted for the plate and beat the throw home. Hickory went up 6-5 in the sixth on a two run homer by Tripp Martin. But Savannah countered with three runs in the seventh as Johnson led off with a solo shot over the wall in left. Guillorme followed with a single and Becerra smoked a two-run shot to left off Kelvin Vasquez, who was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in two innings.

Scarlyn Reyes improved to 6-4 for the Gnats, allowing six runs on five hits in six innings. Paul Paez had two scoreless innings in relief and Jimmy Duff picked up his fifth save without allowing a runner in the ninth.

Savannah continues its series at Hickory tonight at 7 p.m. as Corey Oswalt (3-2, 4.70 ERA) takes the mound against a pitcher to be named for the Crawdads.

UPDATE: Bull River Bridge reopens after head-on wreck

$

Traffic to and from Tybee Island was at a standstill for about two hours Saturday after a head-on wreck on the Bull River Bridge that sent several people to a hospital.

Police say Dustin C. Kinser, 33, was heading toward Tybee in a white Ford Fusion about 3:55 p.m. when the car in front of him slowed down for traffic that was stopped ahead. In an attempt to avoid running into that car, Kinser veered into oncoming traffic, striking a black Ford F150 driven by 55-year-old Steven M. Sinclair head on, said Michelle Gavin, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

Sinclair and three other members of his family who were riding in the truck were taken to Memorial University Medical Center with injuries police did not believe to be life threatening. Kinser was extricated from his car by firefighters and taken to Memorial in serious but stable condition, Gavin said.

Officers shut down both lanes of the bridge while first responders tended to the injured drivers, accident investigators documented the scene, and a wrecker cleared the vehicles from the roadway. Tybee Island police also responded.

The wreck is still under investigation.

Police: Road rage leads to Tybee Island highway stabbing

Police say road rage involving a man in a U-Haul and a motorcyclist on Tybee Island sent a man to a hospital Saturday evening with stab wounds.

Officers blocked off westbound U.S. 80 near Lazaretto Creek Bridge to conduct an investigation after they saw an injured man on a motorcycle and realized he’d been stabbed, said Tybee Island Police Chief Bob Bryson.

An ambulance took the man to Memorial University Medical Center, and police began searching for a suspect.

Bryson said a dispute broke out between someone in a U-Haul and the motorcycle driver while they were in traffic on U.S. 80. At some point, someone associated with the U-Haul stabbed the motorcycle rider, he said.

Police who were investigating and looking for evidence reopened the road shortly after 8:30 p.m. The highway stabbing came shortly after the road reopened after a head-on wreck on the Bull River Bridge.

Bryson said about 9 p.m. that no one was in custody, but police were pursuing leads.

Crawdads snap Savannah's win streak

HICKORY, N.C. — The Sand Gnats saw their 10-game win streak come to an end Saturday in a 3-2 loss to Hickory.

Sand Gnat starter Corey Oswalt had a solid showing on the mound as the 21-year-old right-hander from San Diego went seven innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked two.

But the Gnats’ red-hot bats finally cooled down a bit. After banging out 49 hits in their last four games, the Sand Gnats were held to six hits, all singles.

Hickory’s Adam Parks came in relief of starter Brett Martin in the fourth inning, and Savannah’s batters couldn’t figure out the 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-hander from Texas. Parks improved to 2-3 on the year by fanning eight batters in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed one unearned run and walked just one batter.

Hickory’s John Fasola notched his 12th save of the year with two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed a one-out single to Eudor Garcia in the ninth, and then picked Garcia off at first base.

The Crawdads scored a pair in the second inning. Luke Tendler singled and Carlos Arroyo moved him to third with a two-out single to right. Rock Shoulders followed with a two-run double to right.

Savannah had a run in the third. Jonathan Johnson led off with a single and stole second. Luis Guillorme moved him to third with a bunt single, and Johnson scored when Wuilmer Becerra grounded into a double play.

Vicente Lupo tied it up at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the Gnats.

Hickory took the lead in the sixth when Eduard Pinto hit a one-out triple to right and scored on Jose Trevino’s single.

The Gnats (34-28) remain tied with Greenville at the top of the South Atlantic League Southern division standings and have won 20 of their last 26 games. Ricky Knapp (1-0, 2.08 ERA) is set to start for the Gnats today at 5 p.m. at Hickory, which will start Ariel Jurado (8-0, 2.09 ERA). Savannah will conclude its four-game series at Hickory Monday, before coming home for a three-game set with Asheville starting Tuesday.
