Savannah-Chatham police call in Georgia Bureau of Investigation after teen injured during arrest Saturday

Savannah-Chatham police have called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation following the arrest of a Savannah teenager who was injured after fighting with officers during an arrest Saturday night.

Undercover officers assigned to the police department’s Undercover Narcotics Investigation Team, or UNIT, were working East Savannah streets Saturday night to disrupt and arrest shooting offenders and street drug dealers when they observed a suspicious black Nissan Altima, said Michelle Gavin, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. they observed the vehicle driving recklessly. The officers, wearing outer vests imprinted with “POLICE” on them, attempted to stop a male exiting the vehicle. The male ran from officers.

That male has been identified as a 16-year-old who listed a Port Wentworth address. His name was not released.

Another undercover officer wearing an outer vest with “POLICE” imprinted on it also responded. That officer chased the teen and tackled him to the ground. A fight ensued and the teen refused to comply with officers’ commands, police said. Officers used physical force, but the individual continued to fight, police said.

It was only after the arrival of a K-9 team that the teen stopped fighting with officers and complied, police said. The K-9 did not bite the teen, Gavin said.

The teen was then placed in handcuffs. During a pat down search, officers found 10 small bags of marijuana on the teen. He was then placed in the back of a patrol car.

The teen told officers he was tired and had asthma and officers called for EMS. The teen was coherent, but was having trouble breathing, police said. Southside Fire and EMS responded and transported the teen to Memorial University Medical Center for further examination.

After being advised of the issues at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, Chief Joseph Lumpkin requested the GBI to investigate the incident.

The teen is under police watch at the hospital; he is charged with Obstruction of an Officer, Felony Obstruction of an Officer, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Tools during the Commission of a Crime and Reckless Driving. He will be transported to the Youth Detention Center once he is released, Gavin said.

The officers involved are Sgt. Corey Schaff, Officer Antwan Diggs, Cpl. John Eric Smith and Advanced Police Officer Michael Dobson. They have been placed on restrictive duty status. That means the officers are authorized to be armed and report for restrictive duty, but to perform only administrative functions, no street assignments, no overtime assignments or off-duty assignments.

The K-9 officer who responded was Advanced Police Officer Phillip Collard.

Members of the UNIT were in plainclothes and not outfitted with body cameras. Lumpkin has ordered that any overtime officer or others deployed in support of the UNIT wear body cameras and be equipped with Tasers.

HICKORY, N.C. — Hickory’s Jose Trevino hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and Crawdad pitchers shut down Savannah batters on seven hits in a 8-1 victory Sunday.

The Sand Gnats’ only score came in the top of the seventh when Vicente Lupo, Joe Tuschak and Adrian Abreu slammed consecutive singles.

Hickory added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on three singles and a groundout, and put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth with a four-run burst, sparked by a two-run double from Carlos Arroyo.

Savannah reliever Dawrin Frias (0-1) took the loss, taking over in the sixth. Frias was tagged for six runs, five earned, and four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Starter Ricky Knapp had a solid five innings, holding the Crawdads scoreless on three hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Ariel Jurado (9-0) earned the win in relief for Hickory. Jurado worked five innings, giving up one run, four hits, no walks and striking out five.

The Gnats have a 1/2-game lead over the Greenville in the South Atlantic League’s Southern Division.

Greenville lost to Rome 5-2 Sunday.

The Sand Gnats wrap up the road series tonight at 7 in Hickory. They return to Grayson Stadium Tuesday for a series with Asheville.

Gas prices up slightly in metro Savannah

$

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have risen 0.4 cents a gallon in the past week to $2.64 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.

The national average has increased 5.5 cents a gallon in the last week to $2.81/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Prices Sunday in the Savannah area were 90.9 cents a gallon lower than the same day one year ago and were 13.1 cents a gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 11.1 cents a gallon during the last month and stands 85.8 cents lower than a year ago.

“Thanks to a large surprise decline in both crude oil and gasoline inventories last week, gasoline prices unexpectedly regained upward momentum,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. “The government’s weekly report on petroleum supplies was a major departure from what we’ve seen this far in 2015 with major jumps in crude inventories, so the market reacted significantly to the year’s first big decline in supply.

“Meanwhile, continued and new glitches in the Great Lakes region has led to a big spike in prices throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia and Wisconsin. It’s been a rough week at the pump as unexpected malfunctions and summer maintenance have led to very tight supply in the region.

“The rest of the country saw modest increases in the last week with the primary catalyst being the lousy EIA report. Should we see another big surprise this week, I don’t want to see the market’s reaction. I see oil currently overvalued and believe the market will eventually come to its senses.”

Georgia newspaper: The sun has NOT exploded

Our sister newspaper the Athens Banner-Herald had an interesting development on its website, www.onlineathens.com, today. You may have seen it online already, but just in case here's what happened in their own words:

OnlineAthens.com, the website of the Athens Banner-Herald, was the victim of an online miscue early Monday when an unauthorized updated news item atop the site announced “the sun just exploded.”

The item was taken off the site and the Banner-Herald is investigating.

“We’re currently trying to determine what happened to ensure it doesn’t happen again,“ said Joel Kight, Director of Digital of the Athens Banner-Herald.

The erroneous message on OnlineAthens, which is being shared across social media this morning read, “This is the emergency broadcast system. Please ignore this message as always. BTW, the sun just exploded, and we’re all about to die."

“And to our knowledge, the sun has not exploded,” Kight said.

The 16-year-old boy injured during an arrest Saturday night with Savannah-Chatham police officers was released from Memorial University Medical Center on Monday, said Michelle Gavin, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

The teen, who is charged with Obstruction of an Officer, Felony Obstruction of an Officer, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Tools during the Commission of a Crime and Reckless Driving, was transported to the Youth Detention Center after his release from the hospital.

The teen was injured during an arrest attempt Saturday night after undercover officers observed him driving recklessly and attempted a traffic stop after which the suspect fled from police before he was tackled and began fighting with officers. It was only after the arrival of a K-9 team that the teen stopped fighting with police, Gavin said.

After he was placed in handcuffs, officers found 10 bags of marijuana on the suspect who complained that he was tired, suffered from asthma and was having trouble breathing. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Metro Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident.

Gnats drop third straight to Crawdads

HICKORY, N.C. — Savannah left seven stranded and went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position Monday, and the Sand Gnats dropped their third game in a row at the Hickory Crawdads in a 4-1 defeat.

Hickory took the final three games of its four-game home series against Savannah. The Gnats entered the series on an eight-game win streak and won Friday’s opener 8-6.

Casey Meisner took the loss for the Gnats (34-30) and yielded four runs off four hits, including two home runs, in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five but dropped his record to 6-2 and bumped his earned run average up to 2.15.

Eduardo Pinto and Rock Shoulders blasted a pair of two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to erase a 1-0 Sand Gnat advantage.

After Jon Leroux walked and Jon Mora and Vicente Lupo earned an ejection for arguing with the home plate umpire, Tomas Nido doubled to center field to advance Leroux to third. Patrick Biondi was hit by a pitch on the next at-bat to load the bases for the Gnats, but Jonathan Johnson grounded out to preserve the Hickory lead.

Savannah third baseman Eudor Garcia went 2 for 4 with a double and scored the Gnats’ lone run.

Hickory’s Luis Ortiz earned the win, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out nine in five innings of work. He improved to 4-1 on the season and owns a 1.72 ERA.

The Gnats return to Grayson Stadium today to begin a three-game home series against Asheville.

Police: Man shot in Savannah early Tuesday morning

Police say they’re investigating the drive-by shooting of a man in an eastside Savannah neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

Whoever shot the 27-year-old man, said Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Julian Miller, may have been in a stolen car. The victim was treated for injuries not believed to be life threatening after being shot at 12:53 a.m. on the 1100 block of East 38th Street.

He had been standing in front of a house when a white Honda sedan drove by then returned. The car’s occupants opened fire on the man, Miller said.

A car matching the description was reported stolen from the 200 block of Hampstead Avenue about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police ask anyone with information on the case to call the anonymous CrimeStoppers service at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters’ identities remain confidential and they may qualify for a cash reward.

A tip line is also open directly to investigators at 912-525-3124, and most area clergy have agreed to serve as liaisons for anyone who would like to share information with police anonymously.

Fire officials push pool safety after two near-drownings in Savannah area

Firefighters are urging parents to stay vigilant when children are in swimming pools after two near-drownings in two days in the Savannah area.

First responders were called to the Stonebridge subdivision off Berwick Boulevard about 6 p.m. Monday after a toddler was pulled by family members from the bottom of a community swimming pool, said Assistant Southside Fire/EMS Chief Wayne Noha. A 15-year-old bystander performed CPR, and she was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in critical condition.

Her condition was improving Tuesday afternoon, Noha said, adding that he’d just spoken with family members who said she was “doing quite well and asking for purple Jell-O.”

First responders were called to a similar incident late Tuesday morning in the Willow Lakes subdivision off Quacco Road.

There, a 6-year-old boy was coughing up water when he was pulled from a pool, Noha said.

“It’s so important to keep a constant eye on children while they’re in the water,” Noha said. “Those parents in both instances said they only turned away for a moment, and they were both at the bottom of the pool.”

He said both children were in the pools’ shallow ends.

Noha said children who cannot swim should always be placed in flotation devices until they’re proficient in the water, and even then, someone should always watch them.
